I actually compared the prices of Eastlink and BellAliant (the two main companies in Nova Scotia, where I live) and (because I can't get FibreOp with Bell) Eastlink is the better company to go with... well only because I got a special deal because of the apartment building I'm living in

Where I live we have the illusion of choice since it's considered neutral ground by the ISPs. If Verizon has a deal, you'll bet you'll see Comcast with the same deal. The only real tech competition out here is 3rd party computer stores which generally specialize in gaming. They also shill out for any ISP willing to pay them and it's painfully obvious when they do it.

I sense that this decision will have a bigger effect on folks living out in the mountains.

There are advantages to being a small country, I guess. In Israel, every ISP is available everywhere so there's actual competition.

You don't realise just how good we have it in the UK, and even then it could be better.

That's not taking into account the other draconian shit the Tories have been trying to pull, of course.

Try The Netherlands.
We basically have two cable operators, both of which are owned by Liberty Global.

You can get internet through the phone-lines or satellite, but that's .... yeah... let's not.

So, at least if you don't like your cable provider in the US, you can move to another state or city. There is an element of choice there at least. Not much of a choice though.
Here, you'll have to move to another country to get a different cable provider....

Where I am in the country at the moment (England), I can only get one ISP and that one ISP can provide a maximum of 2.90mbps.

So yeah. Hard to sympathise too much...

Sasktel is nice. Bell is basically Sasktel where I live so I might as well support the ISP who looks after the infastructure

Hey! That's not true!

... We have three fundamentally identical ISPs to choose from. If you pick Telus, your mugger wears a yellow mask.

And here in the UK we have about a million ISPs that have to run their service through BT but only Virgin has their own better line that does get strained by other ISP. Yet, the service we have here is really fucking good and quick.

Side note. With BT and other services using BT line, they have to pay line rental onto of the Broadband you want. With Virgin, nope, because no one uses their home phone any more because, seriously, mobile deals are cheap with unlimited this and that, you don't need to pay the added line rental crap and just have the broadband.

So screw you TalkTalk for being a pile of horse shi... *Limited Access*

You're pretty much spot on about Canada.

You either bend over for Bell, Rogers, or Videotron. All three are shady assholes who charge a lot, and give you really low caps. >_>

Well DSL can have 200Mbps if they have the latest equipment, actually next year 1 Gbps should start to be available, of course that dependent on company actually upgrading their equipment, luckily where I live the local phone company actually do, and they are aggressive enough in their pricing that Bell Canada as abandoned offering anything but the most basic landlines service in the city, basically so they can sell combo package along the mobile contract.

But if it was not for that local company, I admit the city would have the same crappy ISP then the rest of Canada.

In Sweden I get to pick between several ISPs. It depends on what I want. I mean first I need to decide how I want it. Do I want a landline, fiber optics, 3G or 4G?

Then I've got to pick from a bunch.
The ones I can think of right now are Tele2, Telia, Telenor, Com Hem, Bredbandsbolaget, 3, Conviq and probably a few more.

Choice is nice and there's sites to check what's available where you live and to make comparing prices and such easy, and if they annoy me I'll just change. Might take a few days, but I can get the new one set up before I cancel the old one so there should be no downtime.

Can't complain too much about speed and such where I live, but the service? Ho-ly butts... When something breaks on their end you first have to build up your case as if it's murder trial before they'll even believe you. Then you'll have to deal with the classic call center, who on top of their usual shenanigans will try their very best to rile you up. Presumably just so they'd have an excuse to hang up on you. Then, if you managed to convince them you are in fact not delirious, you wait a week or two for their chosen champion to arrive. That's reasonable right? I mean, it's not like you were going to do anything but look at cat pictures anyway. And then, the second he arrives, you chain that f***** to a radiator and feed him nothing but water until the issue is fixed! If you want to be extra sure, have some goons take his family back home hostage too. Why? Because these guys are on a ludicrously tight clock, and if they can not fix it within 30 seconds they will not even bother. They will simply lie to your face, and then leave like a thief in the night while you check if it's fixed. Thus leaving you back at square one. Once all of that is behind you and the miracle that is a repair has materialised, they will cheekily send you a bill, despite promising not to, because somehow their crud system breaking was your fault after all.

Seriously. When you have a contract with telenet, and you know someone who knows their way around a home network? You buy that person dinner, you give that person footrubs, and every Christmas you send them a card. Because the day will come, when the telenet reaper comes-a-knocking. And it is on that day it will all pay itself back tenfold, because you will get to tell them: "Not. Today."

I'd like a short, stocky mugger with a mustache and a classic Beagle Boys mask and blue cap combo, please. Striped shirt optional but appreciated. Visible scars are a benefit.

That can't be right! I read free enterprise and men were banned in Sweden! It's true, I read it on thedailyreagan.jesus! There can't be better choice in a socialist country.

(Doh-hoh-hoh! Hoh... I'm sorry...)

The ISPs aren't actually half-bad here, true. It works damn well, everything considered. Of course, the mugger of your choice do freeze to death during the winter at times, but it's usually fixed reasonably quickly.

I remember it being better. But then buyouts happened and shit like that, and everything conglomerated into two asshole providers. But at least there's a lot of fiber going about (even the tiny village I used to live) and the speeds and all that are pretty awesome. It's a little less rosey here with our southern neighbors. Like, they have data caps here. Data caps. What archaic nonsense is this?!

Despite there only being two ISP's, I do miss our ICT infrastructure. It's pretty damn sweet.

Wait, why are we all measuring the sizes of the dicks that screw us over?

"You think you've got it bad? My cable provider has three inches on yours!"

"Yeah, well we get to choose between Sauron with a serrated metal condom, the one with bad odor, and Gary Busey."

Can't we all agree that cable providers are super evil, and be friends?

Hull? KC is the only ISP in hull and that reaches around the same mps. I just want to play online without my NAT being set to moderate.

I live in England, have countless options for ISPs and yet my connection is terrible. Just tested it and download speed comes out at 1.14mbps. There are marked drops in performance at certain times of the day; I'd say right now is when it's slowest.

I can barely play a YouTube video consistently at 240p with this connection.
