Hate to get all preachy and thumping the activism drum, but Mozilla is having an email campaign to maintain net neutrality, and I figured I'd drop a link if anyone wanted to join in on the mass spamming. If not, feel free to ignore. I just figured we all use the internet at some point or another, and probably would like to see it continue to work the way it works now.

How the heck Internet providers have the balls to do this is beyond me. Like they already have a shitty service and yet wish to screw over customers more.

All this talk about ACTA/SOPA/PIPA/Net Neutrality brings me back to a time when the Escapist was more passionate (and populated) about such issues...

More OT: I have no big opinion on the matter. It's a complex issue that I'd prefer to leave in the hands of more knowledgeable people.

Whatever, just wash your hands.

Seems like these fights always prolong the inevitable. I thought we took care of this years ago but its popping back up again? Sigh.
Ultimately what we need is a constitutional amendment for net neutrality. We are having the fight again now since trump is in office (still sounds like a bad joke) and his fcc guy is determined to kill it off.

Hey, big question from somebody who's totally ignorant on the subject, but what is the argument from the other side? Like, how are they justifying it if its so obviously wrong?

It won't change anything with or without net neutrality.
These examples prove that statement is false.

So a few minor things. Big deal.

Its very important to keep a free and open internet, it would hurt everyone otherwise. Even trolls have their favorite content creators. Everyone should help to keep it that way.

Looking at the subject, isn't this already not happening by some powerful companies? Google algorithms will ignore the existence of certain sites whether maliciously or not. Twitter, Facebook and Youtube engage in censoring content. The term is mainly for Internet service providers but shouldn't it be also true for those companies?
You can choose not to use google, youtube or facebook, as there are alternatives that are accessible to everybody.

Some people do not have a choice of ISP or cannot change ISPs without significant costs.

No, it isn't the same at all. Google not having something show up in search results is not the same thing as an ISP slowing down or blocking a site they do not like. I can use another search engine. In many ares you ONLY have ONE internet service provider in the US and nto havea choice about it at all. It will allow for them to artificially slow down access to certain sites just to charge more to those who " pay the toll" allowing for internet access to go to the highest bidder.

What companies like AT&T have done in the past is try to artificially slow down/ bottleneck peoples current internet speed to try and force them to upgrade to a more expensive service. Without Net Neutrality, they will be able to block access to competitors content, or sites that speak out against them and slow down access to anyone who doesn't pay their extra fees they create to access normal speeds.

The worst part about this now is that simply because Trump supports it, we have people who were against it before now trying to say " it doesn't matter anyways" BS because they think this MUST be a partisan issue when it really is just an issue of certain companies looking to screw people over.

It is messed up and due to Trump appointing an FCC Head that is trying to do everything in his power to make this happen, including allow anti net neutrality bots spam comments while at the same time they preventing actual people from posting Pro net neutrality comments by actually locking them out of the system at one time and refusing to provide any documents regarding that event that they claimed was responsible to the FOI requests shows they have no interest in really hearing from those who do not approve.
