Netflix Axing DVD Management for Online Streaming

The movie rental and streaming company is hopeful that it can improve its service, by making it every-so-slightly worse first.

If you're the kind of Netflix user that watches as many movies and shows on DVD as you do via instant streaming, then things are about to get a little bit more inconvenient for you. Netflix is removing the option to add movies to your DVD queue from everywhere except the Netflix website.

In a post on the company blog [http://blog.netflix.com/2011/01/removing-add-to-dvd-queue-from.html], Netflix said that it was removing the option so that it could focus on the titles that were available for instant viewing, rather than those that weren't. Netflix also said that the function tied up resources that it felt could be better used in improving the overall streaming experience. The post also noted that this would not affect most Netflix customers, as the majority already used the website to manage their DVD queue.

But while this change will mean nothing to a lot of subscribers, plenty of other users have expressed their dismay at Netflix's decision. I must admit, making the service slightly less convenient for people seems like a backward step, but it seems like the kind of inconvenience that most people will forget quite quickly, if they even notice it at all.

I rarely add things from anywhere but the website. In fact, I rarely add things at all.

I didn't know you COULD add from anywhere but their website.

I was worried. Now it turns out nothing has changed for me.

A) This will definitely make my Netflix experience better.

B) I wonder why they didn't just add a check-box to the user profile to toggle this behavior.

They only recently added the Search function to other devices like 2 months ago (you had to do it all online before that), so I don't see how this is all that inconvenient, or news worthy.

Where are these "plenty of other users" who are whining as well?

Wait, you mean there was a way to add movies besides their website? I've been using Netflix for months and I've never heard of any other way of adding movies.

Well that's a change that I don't think we'd have even noticed had I not read this article, since I wasn't aware that you could do that in the past - huzzah for removing options that I wasn't using so I won't miss them, heh.

It seems like they should worry less about moving DVDs around and more about converting said videos to a streaming format.

Really, 80% of the movies on their streaming service are C-list or worse, and even the most famous movies are always on DVD.

There might be copyright issues, but I'd think that they could find a workaround...

I really wish they would let you stream movies from their whole selection, not just the limited selections they have right now.

Kinda a bummer I liked being able to add from streaming since the website is really slow on a ps3 but I understand that there probably aren't a lot of people that its going to be an issue with.

Hey, if they redirect those resources to acquiring more and better instant queue titles. (Such as the REAL Garfield animated cartoon from my childhood, rather than the 3d trash that they just added) then I'm all for it.

I can tell you why this probably happened. People likely kept confusing the DVD-only movies with the instant streaming ones, and they kept flooding the support lines, asking why they couldn't stream a certain movie.

That's my theory, at any rate.

You can add from outside of the website?
No you can't anymore. i guess it was an option for console and set-top box users but I am neither so it does not affect me.

Whaaaat? I don't often grab things from my Wii to watch that I haven't added on the website, but I have done it occasionally. What's up with that, yo?
