Adapter in Win 7 reads OK, can see the SSID just fine, but get a 169.x.x.x. non-routable address. Manually input valid address no help. reads media disconnected. HELP!d

Manually disabled ethernet LAN adapter. Wireless adapter (Linksys to Linksyst router) enabled. Device mangler says it is fine

Manually reset w/ button Linksys router, unplugged and plugged adapter, disconnected, connected to SSID, did static, then DHCP address multiple times.

If it was the adapter, why do I see strong SSID signal? Router is working w/ 2 PS3, 360, Wii, 2 other laptops. One desktop Win 7 still fails.

Do you leave your desktop on standby / hibernate? If so a quick restart may just get it going. I know it doesn't sound technical but this occasionally happens to me on Win 7.

When you tried to manually input an ip you used the 192.168.*.* range right ? home routers usually work on this range (also, stupid question, but you did assign it an adress that was free right?) You also set the same manual address in the router right ?

It might be the adapter, SSID/signal and getting connected is one thing, getting a valid ip is another thing altogether (ip 169.254.* = no valid ip obtained)

Also, try connecting it with a cable to see if your computer gets an ip immediately, if it does your settings should be fine (although lan and wifi settings are separate, you can compare)

sounds like your router itself is messed up. Because IPs don't come into it until after you already connect to the network. Does wired internet work fine? Can you access your router's IP?
Thanks guys: Ends up Norton AV was pissed about something. I uninstalled it (knowing the system was clean), reinstalled it, all better now.

Holy smokes that was aggrevating. I have an old laptop that can't run AV. I just go to trusted sites and never log on to anything secure that matters on it and after 3 years of doing that, never had a problem.

It's not something I'd advise under the vast majority of circumstances, but it is bad when your AV is worse than the disease.

Thanks again for the input.

Instead of "ressource hog" Norton, you could install a "lite" antivirus (Avast! comes to mind) it works great and dosen't take 10% of the ressources Norton does.

Thanks, I'll look into it. Buddy also recommends Viper. For $50, he has every PC in the home covered, and it found problems his McAffee at work didn't.

I'll check out Avast! too. Norton has really ticked me off.

Avast! is free, you just have to fill a 5-minutes form once a year :)

Not that 50$ is a lot, but when something free is just as good...
