Just recently we've decided to put the house up for sale and as a result I've lost my Ethernet cable that usually trails through the house. To remedy this I bought a wireless PCI-e card to pick up our wireless. However Sky's stock router is a piece of shit (Sagem F@AST 2504 I believe) and no device in my room gets a decent signal despite being about two or three metres (about 10 feet) away.

But everything else is portable, that's fine. But my short of rearranging my room (again) I was wondering if there was some kind of external reciever I could get for my PC? If not is there any other solution you can offer? If no-one knows of such a device I'd be grateful, if not I'll be looking to get a pair of homeplugs, could any offer any recommendations of particular ones?

Many thanks in advance!

Well, the only kind of external receiver you could use you already have (your pcie wifi card) i'm guessing there's something in your room's walls that's very bad for signal if you're that close to the router and not getting decent signal.Only way around this would be either 1- an ethernet cable... or 2- a very powerful receiver that would be able to get decent (i didn't say good) signal, like instead of a pcie card (which is behind your computer, close to the ground, etc) buy a *GOOD* USB wifi adapter that you could place better.

It's also important, in your case anyways, since you have a (self-professed) crappy emitter to get a powerful receiver to be able to get some semblance of signal.

Most electronics store people will have no idea whatsoever of what that means but if you go to a good place (or if you shop yourself) You'd want something that can output at least 15 dBm, preferably 18 and up.

Thanks very much, I'll admit I didn't break the bank wth my PCIe card but then that was before I changed providers. I wish I could use my Buffalo wireless N router, but to do so would breach the contract I have with the ISP. Also I'm really baffled by the bad signal, our house is relatively new so the walls are paper thin.

At any rate seeing as using my lovely ethernet cable is out of the question I'll be looking to get a better reciever. I was just wondering if there was perhaps a reciever that had a wired antenna I could place closer to the router from my room. Thanks for your help.

That woud be part of the point with the USB adapter instead of pcie, since you can put it at the end of a 10 feet cable :)
