Okay, guys, forget it.

I didn't realize how one-sided the conversation would be, and I completely agree with you guys, so there really isn't much discussion value. Go ahead and let this thread die.

I think it would receive less praise... but the puzzle stuff is still all intact so they couldn't call it bad.

Look at Braid? That was good right?

Atmosphere is part of a game, obviously taking it away or changing it to something that the game isn't about will make it worse.

What kind of question is this? Why not ask if Ico would have been as good if there were voice actors, or if Portal would have been as good without Glados, or if Braid would have been better in 3D.

"What if the world was very generic?" The game would suck and no one would care. If ANY game is generic, we generally don't look too highly upon it. But the games that do create unique atmospheres that obviously stand out, these are worthy of attention.

It seems to me that this would be fairly obvious.

I didn't like it, but your point is still valid.

I haven't played Limbo on account of it not being on steam, but I have seen a bunch of gameplay videos and it seems like a very atmosphericly-keyed game. It'd probably rated lower than most de-atmoshpered games, were it to be de-atmosphered.

By that I don't mean the entire game is generic, just the look of it. The puzzles and gameplay are still completely intact, but only the look is different.

You'd ruin Limbo by adding color to it. Its art direction is what propels it above the common fodder.

The game is in color. True creative expression is not to label something as uncolored just because the chosen colors were black, white, and several shades in between. You're essentially asking if the game would be as highly praised if it were mis-colored. I can definitely see why being wrought in the wrong colors for the job would prove problematic to its appeal.

It would be a lot less popular if it was fully colored. The dark tone is what defines that game, it gives the game a surreal haunting feel. Something that would be lost if color was added to the game. It would still likely be praised as a good puzzle game, but it would not be held up as an "example" in artistic design for video games.
