New Adventure Time Game Will Take its Cues From Zelda

Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom is inspired by the Nintendo classic: The Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past.

The last few Adventure Time games have been fairly lackluster at best. Specifically, Explore the Dungeon Because I Don't Know was criticized for its repetitive gameplay and lack of depth. Developer Wayforward Technologies and publisher Little Orbit have taken this fan feedback to heart, and along with series creator Pendleton Ward have looked to a classic Nintendo franchise for inspiration.

Adventure Time: Secret of the Nameless Kingdom (SotNK) will take cues from 1992's The Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past, a Little Orbit representative told Joystiq [http://www.joystiq.com/2014/06/14/the-next-adventure-time-game-is-a-link-to-the-past/?ncid=rss_truncated] during E3.

The rep explained that Ward himself had "hinted" to the publsiher that he wanted the next game to be more Zelda-like In gameplay terms, that means a bigger overworld, dungeon puzzles and light RPG elements. In SotNK, players will be able to buy health upgrades, damage upgrades or new items that can grant hero Finn additional abilities.

Just like the majority of Zelda title,s SotNK will feature a set of temples and dungeons each centered around a "theme". For example, the pre-alpha level on display was the "Castle of Music."

The Little Orbit rep said the game's puzzles will be designed with trial and error in mind, so that players could eventually guess a solution as long as they kept at it.

Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom is due out for PC, PS3, Xbox 360 and 3DS in November, 2014.

Any word if "Hey, Ice King, Why'd you Steal Our Garbage?" was any good?
It was actually quite good.
I played it on the original DS version so I have no knowledge of the 3d effects but the pixel art was done really well.
Gameplay wise, like this new game, Hey Ice King took a lot of inspiration from Zelda but not from one of the classics.
Instead, this time from the not so acclaimed Zelda 2 and you know what? It worked.
You'll spend most of your time in side scrolly action platformer swinging your sword as Finn and using bigger move as a combo between yourself and Jake to get to bosses, unlock new powers and to chase Ice King for being a creep.
If you're wondering where Jake is while you're playing Finn, don't fret, he's in your backpack because he's feeling lazy. Classic.
The rest of the time you'll be in the overworld walking a map of Ooo as Finn and using Jakes various unlockable abilities to traverse terrain and get to the next location. On the way you'll be stopped by enemies who spawn on the map and pull you into a mini version of the action platforming part of the game. Defeating these will get you items Mario style power-ups and healing items for latter on.
All of this fits really together and doesn't really feel much like a chore, though it may grind against you near the end but what will keep you going is the writing. More than solid the writing feels like another episode, each character fits their profile and interacts how they should such as the aforementioned Ice King being that sad senile old creep and Jake just being lazy. Another nice touch is the nods to the show that would usually be bulk forced into games based on cartoons but this time take a backseat to the story, not disrupting but still there.

TL;DR It's pure goofy fun and it's Adventure Time.
Just don't get the other one
Also this is a boss.

You can't fault that.

Edit: I completely forgot to say how much I want this new game.
I want it a lot.
That is all.

Now this has my interest. I know one of Finn's favorite things to do is exploring dungeons, making it like a Zelda game makes too much sense.

It was a very respectable action platformer but very short. You could finish it easily in about 5 hours.

It's dissapointing and ironic that all of Adventure Time's games suck*, especially considering that Adventure Time itself was inspired by 8 bit games, especially Zelda, Wayforward is a very talented studio, let's hope they can pull off a Zelda clone with Adventure Time ^.^

[small]*I haven't played any of them, but reading reviews and comments about those games, tells me that most of them suck.[/small]

What I want to see is a proper Adventure Time game. I am talking about a game made specifically for the Adventure Time setting, not just some throw back.

Yeah, Adventure Time: HIKWYSOG was pretty good. I got the 3DS version, and I can say the 3D was handled quite well. Having flat layers of 2D sprites probably helped in developing the different levels of depth. As for the gameplay, it really does feel like a modern, better version of Zelda 2's mechanics. I just wish it was longer.

Here's hoping Adventure Time: Secret of the Nameless Kingdom will be just as good, or even better. Explore the Dungeon Because I DON'T KNOW was awful and made me quickly regret preordering the Collector's Edition, but returning to the Zelda-inspired method of design gives me hope that we won't see a repeat of ETDBIDK's badness.

Also, do you think any of the developers noticed the new game's abbreviation (SotNK) is similar to that of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night(SotN)? The explicit Zelda inspiration makes me think it might just be a fluke.

I always thought that ETDBIDK was awful because the game keeps assuming that you would REALLY take advantage of co-op all the time, basically... and, even then, only Marceline is OP enough to even make the dungeon-crawling gameplay bearable enough to want to keep playing through "most" of the BS, anyway...

Now, I'm wondering if this "Nameless King" is none other than Dracula or Alucard or an enemy boss who's weak to whip-like attacks and the game's equivalent to "holy water"...

OT: Looks like I got another Adventure Time game to look forward to near my birthday, it seems... And since it's "taking cues" from LTTP, I wonder if there's going to be an alternate world where Finn is now Fiona or something...

The worst part about that is that the 3DS version seems to be restricted to singleplayer. Even if it DID had co-op though, the game itself is pretty bad. There's ever-present lag despite the environments looking like unfinished placeholders or versions from an early render pass, and the lack of enemy variety becomes quickly apparent.

I really hope the poor quality of ETDBIDK is more a result of restricted development time or a stingy budget from Cartoon Network, rather than indicative of what Wayforward produces, because the other few Wayforward games I've played have been great.

Haha, I hope it's been done on purpose.
I'm liking to imagine that the person who thought it up knows and is hoping for others to notice too, kind of a reverse of our situation here.
