New Anti-Smoking Ads

Alright, That video was just Reefer Madness levels of hate for smoking. Unlike Reefer Madness however, it's a real thing.
Still, Don't shove that into our eyeballs. Everyone's aware of the dangers of smoking. I applaud her courage for doing the commercial, but this is about as close to a hate speech against smokers as you can get without actually delivering a hate speech.

I think the ads are somewhat distasteful, but if they manage to put kids off from smoking (I'm sure someone will do a study at some point), then I can swallow my distaste.

I currently don't have an opinion on the effectiveness of these ads, since their effect, if any, would probably be intangible and more of a "cultural awareness" thing rather than spreading actual knowledge (that is, most people already know smoking is bad, but perhaps these ads do more to make people consciously apply that knowledge).

Shock tactics don't work on me. I'm sure the reason why they came up with these ads is because the shock tactic warnings they wanted put on packs of smokes got killed. Still, I'm sure they work on some people but no one these days goes into smoking without knowing how terrible it is for you. It's been about a month since my last cigarette. I miss is dearly but am glad to have quit. Not for any health reason though.......I like having that extra cash in my bank account.

I suppose if people are going to be shocked out of smoking through a video, instead of statistics and science, it's doing its job well. I don't particularly like these videos, it gives the message that 'if you smoke you're going to end up like me' which isn't necessarily true. But then again, they're having to resort to these shock tactics because facts and figures won't stop them. Hmm... I suppose they're a necessary 'evil' then. I think.

I was shocked out of eating meat by peta slaughterhouse vids, shock tatics work and i think for products like cigarettes shock tatics are most effective, but lets face it, people wont stop smoking until it become to expensive to continue

That one was actually good. It was funny (I liked the pun) it didn't show just the worst case scenario as the other one did, just informed people that second hand smoking is a thing. Which people seem to forget sometimes.

Drink, smoke when you are 16, die at 50 from lung cancer or liver failure.

Or don't put poison in your body in excessive amounts (smoking is worse, since it's nothing BUT poison, at least wine or small amounts of alcohol have beneficial effects), live to 80 and see your grandchildren.

I mean, sure, you can die in a car crash tomorrow. But living every day like it is your last will just hasten your death.


edit: Forgot to mention - second hand smoking poisons air and people nearby few times more than the smoker himself.

You forget the fact that quitting smoking is not very easy. What about all the smokers who began smoking before it became widely known that they were bad, but now are too addicted to quit? If laws like that were made they should be made after the generation of smokers, who became addicted without being told of the dangers, die off.

As for obesity, that can be because of genetics. It's not just that simple. Sure, many people become obese because of obsessive eating habits, but sometimes obesity just runs in families.

As for the people who started smoking before it became accepted that smoking kills then they would be excused from the law.

As for obesity, they should be offered a diet plan (which is easily availible on the internets) nothing more. If they want to eat themselves to death then thats there problem.

This is a slightly different issue in the UK because of the National Health Service.

People who smoke and end up with debilitating diseases as a result, but have no private health insurance, cost the British taxpayer money.

I'm gonna call you out on this because, to put it bluntly, I'm sick of this claim.

I'll use the 2005-06 date range as an example as these are the first stats that I found on my ever so brief search. Although I researched this a while back and found that things were pretty much the same, except more tax was paid.

So, in 2005-06, smokers cost the NHS £5.2bn. Tax revenue from tobacco sales was £9.8bn.

I'll let you work out the difference. I'll also have to ask how happy you'd be if smoking was banned, therefore adding increased taxes to everything else, seeing as the government wouldn't just let all that income disappear.

Tax revenue is probably the only reason smoking is still legal, seeing as they're trying to ban everything else that's hazardous to our health.

As for me, I smoke. I quit for a year once but actually missed it, so I just started again. I don't plan on lasting long enough to feel the effects anyway.........I like a lot of other things that are hazardous (and sometimes illegal)!!

The thing with obesity though is that it isn't as simple as people don't care. Lifestyles as a whole are on a more sedentary turn because of the world we live in. There is a saying now that obesity used to be a rich man's disease, now it's a poor person's. My friend is a landscape designer. His job consists of walking to the car, driving to the office, sitting in a chair and designing plans for about 8 to 10 hours then walking to the car and driving home. That's his job. There are not a lot of opportunities for fitness, save for his weekends and that isn't much help because in order to do anything the exercise needs to be constant. Not to mention the nutritional value of even quality grown food is on the decline because of the use of pesticides and sprays and organic food is far more expensive.

yes organic food is expensive. But locally farmed produce which can be brought from farm shops is of high nutrional value extremerly fresh and extremerly cheap. theres no reason to eat macdonalds every day. if you lead a life style that doesnt allow for exercise then dont consume as many calories. 2500 calories is roughly the recommended daily allownace for a man considering they lead an active life style. and unless your friend sleeps for the other 12-14 hours of the day. He has plenty of spare time. 3 hours of exercise a week is what is recommended to keep the body is some sort of decent fitness.

This is just making excuses.

It's all well and good showing the consequences of actions but finding the worst-case-scenario and presenting it as a likely consequence of smoking is OTT.

Not that governments want people to stop smoking, If they wanted that to happen they'd just make it illegal.
