New Batman Arkham Knight Trailer Teases Team Combat

The Dark Knight gets a little help from his friends.

Batman has a long comic history of working alongside allies, but he's mostly been left to do the fighting all by his lonesome in Rocksteady's Arkham series of games. Those days are over, as Batman: Arkham Knight will feature a new combat mechanic, "Dual Play," which will allow players to swap between Batman and his allies in the midst of combat.

The latest trailer for the game, released today, offers just the tiniest look at the mechanic in action during the final thirty seconds. There's nothing more to see than combo setups where Batman and Robin both get good licks in, without any clarification on how the system functions. As the freely flowing combat is a defining feature of the Arkham experience, it seems safe to assume that it will be a quick and easy action (the trailer's description refers to it as "seamless"), but it's unclear if the maneuvers are context sensitive opportunities or if players could possibly opt to perform combat primarily as an ally character.

In addition to Robin, allies Batman will partner up with using the Dual Play mechanic also include Nightwing and Catwoman.

Arkham Knight is the final installment in Rocksteady's trilogy of games featuring the Caped Crusader, which finds the city of Gotham under siege by The Scarecrow and invaded by an army led by an all new opponent, the titular Arkham Knight. The game will release for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on June 23.

SO HYPED.

But I'll calm down a moment. This kinda-sorta confirms that Azreal isn't the Arkham Knight, so there went that theory (unless they do the same stupid bait-and-switch they did with Arkham Origins). I almost hoped they'd show some co-op gameplay with him, but I'll accept an already awesome thing.

I'm wondering now if single player is stuck on Batman, or if you can tag him out with Catwoman/Robin/Nightwing at certain points in free roam, like they did in Arkham City.

I was going to hold off on buying a PS4 due to my "Never buy first-generation hardware from Sony" rule, but I just may break that for the PS4/Arkham Knight bundle.

This is one of only two games I'm looking forward to this year. I just finished replaying Arkham City, and MAN I forgot how awesome an experience it is. Gonna have to save up to boost my PC so it can handle this.

For those who are curious, the other game I'm excited for is Tides of Numenera.

Love that they brought back Azreal's little prophecy. Yes, we all knew it was going to come up, but actually hearing it was just a nice little touch.

Please allow Nightwing to talk this time around. It was great playing as him in the DLC for City, but the fact that they didn't bother to get a voice for him was really annoying.

Dibs on playing as Catwoman! I call dibs!

I still don't really like how Robin looks in this series. Not his costume, but the way they designed his face. It's about as generic white guy as you can get. Shaved head with a bit of stubble and a serious scowl. At least his personality in the DLC made him much more than that, but still...

Eh... I dunno. Batmobile vs. tanks? I know we've pretty much thrown restraint out the window well before this point but now we may have upped the stakes a bit too far to be believable.

Robin looks like a thug...it's like a random NPC-Mook just put on the costume...other than that, it looks really damn good! I can't wait to get the complete edition in a year or two!

As long as it is smooth as the combat has been in the other games then this is a good addition. Also, nice touch getting Azrael back for the prophecy business, too much to ask that we get the totally 90s blue and yellow bat costume he wore when he was batman?

Calling Jason Todd as Arkham Knight right now by the way. Just have a feeling.

Nah, he has his own story DLC. Besides, Rocksteady claims it's a new, original character.

You could of had my first/second-born. All you had to do was make Azrael playable. I guess if you let me run around Gotham as Nightwing we can be cool. You will let us right?

Is the Escapist not going to cover the backlash against the $40 season pass? They are locking story missions and villain behind a paywall. They expect us to pay $100 for the full story. Call me crazy but I'd say that's newsworthy.
