IGN has just uploaded two new video's of Cryengine 3 in action (on the PC/360/PS3). Sure the level of detail is unmatched by any other engine but there's a far more interesting feature they show here, Cross-platform compatibility. The person doing the tech demo shows that Cryengine 3 allows for a perfect sync between all 3 platforms (he makes changes in real time on the PC editor which immediately take effect on both the 360 and PS3).

So my question is this, what does this mean for the future of console gaming. If developers can develop for both systems using the same engine without having any importing issues does this make the complex differences between the PS3 and 360 architectures obsolete allowing for much better multi-platform releases?

Update:

Ign has just published a walk through of the demo used at the GDC, it focus's on the PS3 version and shows the huge level of detail present in the environments.

Nice engine. Should give the Unreal engine a run for it's money.

It certainly looks impressive. I think this is a good idea in order to reduce development times but I'm sure there was a lot of work to get the engine running identically on both platforms simultaneously. I applaud their determination.

The cryengine 3 is a nice job of porting one of the most impressive engines to date to consoles, i feel that it will probably lack some of the features available on the pc end due to hardware limitations but other than that its nice to see the engine getting more use

The CryEngine 2 already did.

Looks really nice, anyone else wondering whether the hands and gun belong to Crysis 2?

Hopefully this will mean an end to complaints about multiple platform development (I'm looking at you Gabe).

When did the CryEngine 2 give Unreal Engine 3 a run for its money? So far the only games I've heard of using CryEngine 2 were the two Crysis games, whereas Unreal Engine 3 is licensed left and right.

Probably not, consoles are still different from PCs even if the engine can run on it. If they really put their mind to it, sure it could work but it may not be worth it.

Aion uses the cryengine, i'd imagine some more devs do. Though I really don't think it was used as much as UE3

Is it just me, or were those the most gorgeous console visuals... ever?
It's not just you. Unless it's just the both of us.

This is just awesome, Crysis level graphics on consoles... Without the chugging! I worry that the 360 might overheat after a while though, if Fallout 3 was rough on the fan, I can only imagine what this would do.

I knew about the cross platform updating but to actually see it in action is amazing its a shame they haven't really shown any action scenes Crysis is a very explosive action game.

Crytek are officially Nutters

Not quite, the Unreal 3 engine doesn't need a £254,000 PC to run.

If you have somebody on the PC to code them for you, yes. Consoles lack the controls as well as the power to run the editor, which is significantly heavier them the actual game.

Also, the jaggies on the PS3 screen hurt my eyes and the Xbox is in dire need of having it's occlusion distance upped. But maybe that's just console GPU power failure compared to that GTX280 or something in the PC.

Neither does Crysis. Why do people love to exaggerate the cost of a decent gaming PC? For the same price as the PS3/Xbox360 you can get a computer with some serious chops. That doesn't include monitor and speakers, but then again a console doesn't come with an HDTV and a sound system either.
