Long story short: I'll be moving to a new place soon and I feel the need to buy a new desktop. I have a netbook and a desktop already (Using the latter right now). Problem is my brother has administrator right over this computer and he barely uses it anymore (He prefers his laptop). This is the "family" computer, but 90% of the time, I'm the one that sues it because everyone else has their laptop.

At any rate, my brother is a prick and he won't change the admin rights because I would delete most of the programs he has in here that occupy space and he'd rather have ME delete my files. Whatever, I digress. Point is, because of all that, I decided to buy my own desktop to have in my room and stuff. But I'm not very computer-wise, you see. So I don't wanna buy a lame desktop.

This desktop I'm using right now is a Dell. We bought it about 7 years ago. It has a 14 in. monitor and it comes with Windows XP. We can burn and copy CDs in here and it has a printer, speakers, wireless mouse and keyboard. That's pretty much all I know about it. My brother assures me it was the latest model when we first bought it.

What I'm looking for is something affordable, first of all. Nothing beyond 500 or 600 bucks. Less, if possible. I'd like to play some computer games at some point but it won't be a priority since I prefer my PS3 and stuff like that. The monitor might not be a problem since I have a flat screen TV, 20in, I believe, that I could turn into my monitor. So I just need the CPU.

I plan on installing Photoshop and Illustrator on it too. Don't know if that's relevant.

Anyway, any ideas? Any brands I should stay away from? Any cheap options? Any suggestions?

I'm think less than 500 already with tax. I have $1000 in my account right now thanks to tax return. But I don't wanna spend it all at once; I have bills to pay.

What brands would people recommend? Dell? Gateway?...Maybe Apple?

...I really don't like Macs.

For the money you have put together your only option for a budget build is building it yourself or having a friend do it. From scratch builds usually take about $800 if you want something capable. If you have a local computer store, check out refurbished units they have you might be able to find something closer to your price range. Once you have your basic setup you can always upgrade later. AMD(CPU)+ATI(GPU)+ASUS Motherboard will be your best value combo.
