So, now that a new hand held has been announced what do you think about it? Will you purchase it?

I personally think its amazing. The two cameras, SD card slot and built in opera browser add a lot to the console. However the lack of GBA slot may throw a few people off it.

Also there is a DS store, for firmware updates and new channels to be added to the new DS. Miis will be compatible as well it seems.

It is out in a month for Japan and Spring for EU.

Damn you Nintendo, why must you create things I want?

And what about Australia? Don't tell me it's yet another thing we have to wait 6 months+ extra for.

Also, I really don't care. I have a DS, it plays DS games, I bought it to do so. The fancy new stuff is just a novelty that wears off after a week.

Nintendo has done nothing that interests me since Super Mario 64... And that did release in 1997... 11 years ago... Meaning I was 10 at the time...

Then again, handhelds in general confuse me. Handhelds are things you play while you're not home... Not to sound like a troll but, if you're not home, aren't you generally doing something...? I dunno, but there's a limited amount of scenarios I can think of where I'm not home and I have the time to just whip out an handheld and play with it... But hey, nobody's forcing anyone to buy it.

That's completely far from the truth, and one of the negative stigmas that handhelds will probably never shake.

Hand-held Myth #1: I can only play a hand-held console when I'm outside of the house.

Completely untrue. I play my DS quite frequently at the house. Sometimes while sitting at the computer, sometimes for a little while as I lay in bed just before going to sleep, or where-ever. The beauty thing about a hand-held isn't that you can only play it outside of the house, it's that you can play it ANYWHERE. It isn't locked-down to a single room like consoles or a PC, requiring a tedious tear-down/set-up to move to a different location. I can just get it out and turn it on where-ever it suits my fancy.

Hand-held Myth #2: If I only play it while I'm out of the house, then doesn't this mean I'm busy with something else?

Not always. Frankly I keep my DS on me everywhere I go so that if I end-up somewhere with nothing else to do, I can just get that out. Maybe I goto a friend's house and he's playing a single player game for a while, I can play the DS until he's done and we do something else. Boring family get-together? You can play the DS between chatting with random relatives (the flip-closed sleep mode makes it easy to put it down for a while on the fly). Basically, just because you're out of the house doesn't always mean your schedule is jam-packed. I love having my DS handy for those moments when there's a lull in things to do.

I'm sure I could come-up with other myths about hand-held systems if I really thought about them, but those are a couple of the more common ones I tend to see. At the end of the day though, some people are just stubborn. They won't buy a hand-held because they simply don't want one, which is fine, but they always offer-up excuses (generally in the form of a myth) that just ask to be countered. They'll never just up and admit that they simply don't want one.

I'll be buying one of these at launch if 1. the dpad is better than the spongey DS Lite version, and 2. I can get a decent trade-in on my DS Lite.

I wish I could get a decent trade in on mine, but alas it is impossible. The combination of leaving on a coffee table, 2 crazy kids and 2 crazier dogs meant it got thrown to the ground and the right hinge (where the power light is) snapped off entirely. Amazingly it still works but you have to prop the screen up with something. What a nightmare.

I'm a fan of the new DS though, looks pretty ace.

Two cameras? Why do you need two?

They released a browser for the DS a little while back (in the form of a regular game cartridge) and it didn't support a lot of common image file types, video codecs, etc. I can not logically see this one being much better.

There's one inside the clasp, presumably to be used for taking photos (or video) of the player (for in-game avatars, perhaps?), and one on the outside for taking photos of other people while you can still see the screen.

I can't imagine it'll be much better than most cellphone cameras, though - especially since it doesn't seem to have a flash.

Presumably the built-in one will be updated (semi-)regularly, which isn't possible with the stand-alone Opera browser. I'd expect this version to be a little closer to the Wii browser, which is pretty good (although it could do with more frequent updating of the Flash codecs).

As for the video support, that was almost certainly a memory issue rather than a simple compatibility one. Even a short YouTube video would exhaust the DS's memory.

Thing is that, A. The camera idea- almost entering cell phone area? Why take pictures if they only are put on the SD card (which you have to buy extra I assume) B. Opera Browser only works IF you have a wireless AND high-speed internet. So why bother getting it if you don't have that. C. Plays only DS games- ok now they are starting to sound like Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PS3 where you can play all the current console games BUT no backwards compatability.

Knowing Nintendo, they'll re-release old titles in compilations (or as downloads through the DSi Store), making people re-buy them rather than stick with the old carts.

That's no handheld. That's like the Asus Eee PC.

But there are so many useless things. A handheld with a camera? I have a phone and a digi cam which are better.

I can understand the browser but I think it's useless. I want to play with a handheld. I don't want to watch movies or something like that.

This "thing" is like PSP meets notebook.

Anyway I hate Nintendo since they released the Wii and because they can't think of new games.

Edit: I CAN play PS2 and PS1 games on my PS3....

(Thanks to Aniki for clearing those points I had up)

I can't see any of this being useful for a pre-existing DS Owner. Most people already have a camera these days. Browsing sounds clunky, even if it does get supported. Battery life has been decimated, and the screen is only .25 square inches bigger. Still, it's four grams lighter. That's a plus.

What I don't understand is why we can't just have things one way, working from the beginning. Sure they want to get it out there quickly and make money, but it couldn't wait another month or two just to get the bugs out? We can wait.

I'll expand on that last paragraph later. Maybe.

It's not just about ironing out the bugs, though - it's also about adding functionality that customers have been asking for or technology that can improve the machine's appeal to new markets, and give developers more stuff to play with.

I'll take "having my DS for the last couple of years" over "waiting 'til now to get this machine".

Possibly... though honestly, this interests me most in the idea of the DS Lite having a price cut sooner rather than later. I want one, but not enough to shell out $130 for something I'll play in a more casual mood. Not that EVERYONE does that... but that's me.

I think you misunderstood me. Clearly you can play an hand-held ANYWHERE... But the brings about the question: "Why?".

If you're at home...Why? I have yet to see a game for an hand-held (ANY hand-held mind you) that's legitimately superior to anything else of the kind I can play on a PC, or PS2 (I don't own a third gen console, but if you do, even worst)... So as a console, any hand-held so far is clearly inferior, their only advantage is portability...Sure I can bring and play a Nintendo DS in the kitchen but... Why would I do that? I setup my gaming stuff in my room cause it's where I like to play... while I'm playing I'm generally more concerned about the game than constantly changing the room I'm in... Even then if you have a laptop you can do the same with far superior games.

I suppose this varies from person to person but right now I can only think of 1 situation where I would like to have an hand-held: waiting endlessly in line for something. And this happens what... Once every 2 months? Specially with all the new technologies we're developing to allow more and more things to be done online, the need to be stuck hours and hours on tedious lines grows scarce.

Every other possibility, If I'm going somewhere, I'm doing something... If I'm in a family get-together it's cause I wanna hang out with my family, usually over a nice lunch or dinner. If I don't wanna hang out with them, if they bore me enough to want to play games instead, I don't go. I stay home using my computer, or go elsewhere where I DO wanna go and do something I want to do.

In other words, I'm not 12 anymore, I leave the house for 2 situations: I either wanna go somewhere, or HAVE to go somewhere. I'm rarely forced to go anywhere on official business, and even rarely do I have to stand around doing nothing for long periods of time in the process, which is when I'd play an hand-held. If I don't really wanna go somewhere, I don't... If I do want to go somewhere, I wanna enjoy whatever I'm going there to do, which might be hard to do when focusing my attention on a videogame neh?
