So I recently stumbled upon an for this site [http://www.funimation.com/evangelion/].

After watching this the trailer, I have to ask: Whats the point?

What is the point of making a new Evangelion, if you're only going to remake the old one with new animation and dialouge that is only marginally less terrible in some places than the original?

It doesn't even seem like its out to get new fans - I pretty sure most people who care about Evangelion already have all the original content, and I'm pretty sure that people won't buy a new version of an old anime that only has new animation to boast about. Hell, videogames can't even get away with that scheme yet. (Sports games nonwithstanding)

It doesn't even seem like their fixing big things - did they at least find a voice actor for Asuka that doesn't make people want to strangle kittens?

I wish they'd do an anime of that shinji and 40K fan-fiction... I'd pay to see that.
But I'll take a look at this new stuff.

Well, Eva has gotten a reputation in the anime community as this big thing. I think Funimation is opting to bring Rebuild over here is so that a lot of the kids who've been getting into anime in the last few years can now have something new, but can still go through EVA and see what the hub-bub is about.

the series stands as one of the turning points in anime, where violence, sex, disturbing material, and the notions of innocence lost came into the mainsteam of anime rather than just being a cult phenomenon. The newer verson is more of an homage to that original series with it's minimal changes. Those that loved the original series will likely take a look at it and those who were offset by the series' age will now have the oppertunity to look at it in a more contemperary light.

The Rebuild is way different than any earlier Evangelion work. In fact, many fans are saying it's not proper Evangelion as it's actually quite positive and the ending may actually be positive rather than the end of the world.

Please educate yourself before saying it's just a cheap attempt to make money. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Film/RebuildOfEvangelion?from=Main.RebuildofEvangelion]

He screwed it up huh? Damn. I thought this was just Evangelion with updated visuals, which I would've loved to see, but it seems that he's fallen into the anime mainstream of suckage. Such a shame.

Well, I wouldn't say it's screwed up. I've seen the first rebuild film already, and all I can say is it's not traditional Eva. There are some new main characters, some characters aren't important anymore, different things happen, etc.
One thing I must say is that the movies are simply gorgeous. The story is actually quite good. Just go in without any previous stereotypes of what you expect, and you should enjoy it.

Really? That's certainly a turn towards the mainstream. I loved Evangelion, but the level of sheer doom and depression in the original made it hard for me to watch towards the end.

The question is will the end the new series with the awesome End of Evangelion style where Shinji starts to strangle Auska or that stupid ass "congratulations Shinji!" TV ending.

Holy crap, that looks awesome!

Considering how many variations there are (TV series, End of Evangelion, mangaverse, Angelic Days...Super Robot Wars...), I wonder how they're going to do this one.

This has been out in Japan for a while. I think the second movie of the four came out recently, or is coming out soon in Japan. It features new characters, a different plot, and Kaworu jumps in earlier, so his relationship with Shinji doesn't seem rushed.

The point is to retell the story the way the (arguably insane) creator wants because they couldn't get it right the first two (three) times.

Evangelion was one of my earliest animes and, while I'm not really into the stuff anymore, I can't help but find myself excited for this.

I'm sure he'd prefer that to clinical depression, which is what he was falling into the first time around, and why Eva turned out the way it did. (well, that and having no budget for the last few episodes).

And kids, that's why you make an anime whenever you have bouts with depression, loathing and lack of self-worth. You never know how much of a legend you can come up with.

Seriously though, I think I need to see this one. Eventhough it wasn't the one that turned me to anime, it's still quite influential to my viewing habits.

In other EVA-related news, search for "Puchi Puchi Evangelion" in YouTube. It's even more hilarious if your only exposure to EVA was the first anime.
