It seems to me that every game is a sequel nowadays. Gears 2, Resident Evil 5, Killfun 2, Mediocore Gear Splooge 4, FF whatever number it is. Unfunny puns aside, I lived most of my gaming life as a PC gamer. That and the fact that my gaming life killed my social life only 2 years ago means I've missed out on all the gaming franchises that are oh so popular and overrated. If I just jumped into Resident evil or MGS or FF or whatever I'de ave no idea what was going on. Sure their are simple ' Go shoot Nazi's' Games like CoD4, But the only franchises I can call my own are Loz, Metroid, and Fable(I liked the games so sue me) So my question is if their are any new franchises starting that look promising so that in four years I can look smugly down on the gamers who couldn't afford the newest games every week cause they had to buy clothes and s***.

I'm a big fan of western rpg's with goblins and junk and also Space Aliens... And junk. If anyone mentions a Wii game i'll find them down and slip my secret zombie formula into their drinks though if you actualy have a wii your allready braindead.

Hell, goblins and junk are my favourites, too, but I stick to oldschool. I don't think you can really mock people with Baldur's Gate. I mean you could trye. You could mock them for their lack of taste or STR. Haven't seen any new franchises worth playing in a while.

You really shouldn't just look at new entertainment even if you are new to the "hardcore" gaming side. Look at some older ones that still have that new smell, if you have a ps2 or 3 I would suggest gun the original, short but fun and cheap at this point, Devil may cry is a must especially three, and if you like traitorous Namco bastards that switch sides out of the fucking blue you could go with the ace combat series for the ps2. Almost forgot give Dragon quest 8 a try, its a jrpg but i try to convert as many people as i possibly can.

You can pick any FF and not be confused cause its not even one storyline, every game has a different story(apart from X-2)...also FF been around for over 20 years, you should know this by now really...

Get No More Heroes for the Wii.

Well, I started playing Warhammer: Age of Reconing because WoW has like a million expansion packs that all cost a fortune. WAR is alot newer and I'll be there when the new stuff comes out for the first time. I like to be a part of things from the start and not jump in half-way.

Also, Mass Effect is a pretty sweet game and the sequel is in the making. Idk how far it'll go, but I did hear something about a trilogy. Anywho, there's my 2 cents. Go buy something nice. ;)

Wow, you guys really want to be zombies that bad? Or are you just rubbing OP's nose in the Wii... (HAHA! C wut I ddi thar?)

"Promising new franchises...." Hmmm. Well, it would help if you specified a console or PC.

I can only really speak to PC, atm. I think this L4D thing has got some real legs to it: As long as they crank out some additional content every 4 months or so, it's like the best parts of co-op without the massive retard ratio of an MMO. Plus, the mod community should go- in technical terms- 'buck wild' with it.

Wait in order to be a franchise, aren't you supposed to have sequels?

To keep on topic kinda I really am waiting for Pikmin 3, even though I don't have a Wii.

Oh this. And MadWorld. And The Conduit.
Why get a generic first person shooter on the Wii when you can get a much better generic first person shooter on another console?

It's not even out yet to my knowlegde, yet I heard it would be good.
From what I've seen it's just another generic FPS. The only reason it's being hyped is because it's on the Wii.

All the interesting things in The Conduit have been stolen from other lesser-known games. For example, one of their multiplayer modes that they claim is "new and innovative" is a rip off of the multiplayer in The Ship. Almost nobody knows what The Ship is so everyone assumes they made it themselves.

Hey, I dunno about you guys, but I'd jump at the chance to play a next-gen shooter like The Conduit with that nifty Resident Evil lightgun. Conventional controls get a little tiresome after awhile, and who doesn't like a good lightgun game?

On topic, I'd keep my eye on "Wet". It's looking pretty amazing.

You are looking for a franchise?! Last I checked a franchise needs more than one game.

Actually, he brings up a good point:

are you looking for established franchises or emerging franchises?

Because, if they can pull off the stylistic elements that I've seen discussed for 'Wet', I betcha it will become a long-running series... but that's a huge "if".

meh, we had mirrors edge, but other than that, you are right.

another thing is we seem to have way too many fps games around.

we seriously need to exterminate all but 2 of them.

we need more variety, and more new franchises.

Ya, you know, people always say there should navar evar be sequels!! But to me, a sequel is a great opportunity to improve upon a great, but flawed idea! My two best examples are Assassins Creed and Mirrors Edge, both cool, unique, different games but with many flaws. A sequel to both would improve upon the original game, and make for an awesome game!

I'd say "Assassin's Creed", but it all depends on what direction they'll go in the sequel. "Beyond Good & Evil" seems to have been resurrected, so while the original game is a few years old, it's not a "franchise" just yet... And it started out pretty damn awesome.

I think there is some franchise potential in "The Witcher" - not as a series of sequels, but there's a well-established world and in my opinion, the creators could fiddle round with it(*). But it seems like they won't go beyond "Rise of the White Wolf".

"Mirror's Edge" is an enjoyable, original game, and could support a franchise, but I'm afraid the premise might get old quickly.

And, if you're not above a decent RTS/RTW franchise, they might squeeze some more out of "Company of Heroes", if they finally manage to overcome their prejudice against everything which isn't "Post D-Day Western Front".

(*) Unless they decide to make it into an MMO, which would be rather awful for a franchise started with a decent single-player RPG.

Because of what?

inFAMOUS and Prototype are new series that are only just starting.
Yeah, I've heard Prototype will be good, but I'm really looking forward to Alpha Protocol. The guys who were always in Bioware's shadow seem to finally be making a good game of their own that isn't a sequel to a Bioware game!

Whatever, just wash your hands.
new franchises are risky, a game today is a multi million dollar investment and from a buisness stand point, it makes more sense to bet on something already successfull then invest in an unknown quantity
