New game excitement

Maybe getting old has made me stingy.

Stingy? Bah, getting old has made me busy! Working nine-to-five six days a week, studying for a qualification, writing sporadic articles for a video game critical analysis blog, keeping up with webcomics and RSS feeds and the rest of the internet's bullshit, keeping in touch with friends, masturbating into a sweaty coma...there's just too much to do.

When I was a kid I could go home, sit down, and play video games until my parents dragged me to bed. Now I'm an adult I have to be responsible and say "if I keep playing, I won't get up for work tomorrow, so turn the damn game off". I'd still like to play, but it's so difficult to find the time.

I'm still like that - even with games I'm not particularly intrested in. When I order a game it usually takes a week for it to arrive(I order from another country) and that wait is unbearable. Every day is longer than the other and I constantly have to check the mailbox.

Currently waiting for four games to show up and it's been over two weeks since they sent them... Might kill the postman soon.

I went completely crazy over Warcraft III. Over the months leading to its release, I would read everything I could about the game and the ongoing beta. I'm pretty sure I visited the official website and forums on a daily basis for weeks. I had my collector's edition preordered and on the way back home I listened to the soundtrack that came with it.

More recently I was pretty excited about Dragon Age: Origins and Skyrim, but it never quite got close to my obsession with Warcraft III. In general there just seems to be less pre-launch information going on about games unless they have betas with no NDAs (which only seems to happen to MMOs). It's hard to get really excited about something when all you can see are a couple of screenshots and a trailer.

I mainly get excited when a release date is coming up or something is in the mail. Especially bad now that my new PC parts are currently dispatched and coming for me.
Dammit, don't wanna wait until Friday!

I just made preorders for Dishonored, Assassin's Creed 3 and Resident Evil 6.

All coming out (hopefully) in October.

I'm pretty damn excited.

I remember I'd always open up the box and read the instruction manual on the way home. Nowadays I just get home and play it. Most instruction manuals today aren't all that exciting, probably because of a mix of me simply not wanting to read it and the manual itself being pretty bland and boring.

I restrain most of my hype for games until closer to release date to judge it better for what it'll turn out to be than what I hyped it up for.

I remember as a kid whenever I would get a new game I simply couldn't wait to get it home and pop it in. Nowadays I have games I haven't even got around to playing yet. This was unthinkable as a kid. Sure, I do still get excited for games on occasion, but it just isn't the same.

Do you recall memories like this during your childhood?

I loved opening a new game as a kid and smelling the fresh manual! Weird?! Perhaps, but I remember new games having a unique freshness to them.

Not as weird as you think unless we are both weird. I do the exact same thing. That distinct fresh paper aroma that wafts from the instruction manual just gives me a wonderful feeling.

OT: I remember such excitement when I got Final Fantasy IX for christmas one year, I think the act of buying a game yourself does reduce the excitement factor, I remember getting excited upon buying Skyrim, and Yakuza 4 (and Yakuza: Dead Souls) and my nipples will explode with excitement if Shenmue 3 is ever released, other than that though, I generally don't get that excited about new games, sometimes when I get one for free on Playstation Plus gives me a good feeling

In all honesty, I do get excited about getting games that have just come out, games that I've been looking forward to before hand.

If I go out to Gamestop and get a cheap game for ten bucks that's been out for a while already, it's mostly just a spur of the moment thing. But going by the last big game I bought (bought Skyrim on opening night), I was so excited. I had nothing to do that day except play the game, and it was amazing.

I still have that new game feeling. However, now I normally order my game online, so I'm excited on the day it due to arrive, waiting by the door for the postman. But I haven't got a new game since February, and the next one will not be until the end of October, for Assassins Creed 3.

I might end up buying one before then, as it is a long wait.

Of course! When I was a kid I had to pass a laundry list of games I wanted to my parents and when I did get one of the dozens of games I wanted I couldn't pop that sucker into my SNES/PSX/N64/Xbox fast enough! At this point though, I'm 24 and spend...a percentage of my money on games new and old anyway so while I am excited to finally have Kingdom Hearts 3DS, Simon's Quest and, Chrono Trigger respectively, I haven't actually got around to playing all of those yet and can wait since I also have F.3.A.R to try and, Aquaman to get angry at and, 2 Silent Hill games to brave the opening cinematics through. Maybe after work though or...you know I'm off tonight and tomorrow and while I could conceivably use that time to beat Twilight Princess finally, I'm here...not doing that at all...I should stop procrastinating.

I remember when I didn't have access to the internet to look up awesome games to buy and I would "stumble" into games. The first game series I've ever "got into" was Splinter Cell after my friend sold his PS2 and decided to give me the game. I played it for years while Pandora Tomorrow and Chaos Theory got released without me ever knowing. I didn't go on the internet and never visited game stores. Nowadays, the anticipation for games drives me absolutely berserk sometimes. It makes me wish that I didn't know about sequels until the release date was practically on top of me.

Enough stuff to make a new PC.
My cousin helped with most of the buying of stuff, and mixed with me not being all that knowledgeable I'm not massive clued in about it, but from what I can remember the graphics card is the Nvidia GTX 670, a fairly recent power supply, the case of course, and he's got a spare processor that I think is i5 or something similar as well as a motherboard that'll work with everything and 8 gig of ram.
Come Friday I'll check the specs and I'll be able to give an idea of what it actually is in full but right now I'm kind of retarded.

Last week I was utter giddy, squealing with joy when, using the power of DOSbox, I got Warcraft 2 working on my laptop.
As for the joy of it, I guess using steam has turned it more into "wait for it to download, then you can have fun," whilst all the GBA games of the day were automatic plug-in and play.
Or, even worse, maturity had taken ahold of me, and I'm able to control myself.

An i5 with a 670 is going to be a HELL of a machine.

Thanks for the reassurance anyway, good to get a second opinion from another (from what I can tell) professional. But now the wait just gets harder.

Oh, yeah, I meant just for the card. Everything else including the case ends up at about £500. What with the processor, ram, and motherboard all being my cousin's I'm getting them on the cheap
