Alrighty so lately I've been trying to get back into gaming as high school is winding down and I have less work, but I have no new games and I want to get a new one at some point in the near future to hold me over for a while. I was thinking of either SSX or Mass Effect (the first one). But if anyone has any other suggestions then please tell me! Any genre works as long as the game itself is good. I have a PS3 just for reference.

Mass Effect is a good series, but as a PS3 owner, you'll only be able to get ME2 and ME3. Choices from the first game are made by you in a sort of special checklist thing upon starting ME2, or so I've heard.

Assassin's Creed is an outstanding series, especially from the second game onwards. Lots of good old fasioned city scaling free roaming platforming stuff, plus the ocassional assassination.

Sandbox-wise, you've got Grand Theft Auto IV and Red Dead Redemption, great, solid games.

Silent Hill: Downpour just came out, and should be good, if your into some horror.

The two recent Batman games (Asylum and City) are also pretty solid, too.

There's also Uncharted, if you feel like knocking down a few ancient temples.

Oh, and Just Cause 2. Gotta go with the crazy open world revolution stuff. Defenitly worth your time.

Skyrim, Skyrim, Skyrim, if you want a time sink.

Finally, if you have one of the original PS3s, (and I mean original, release day consoles for the PS3 line) you should be able to play PS1 and PS2 games, so you can dig around there.

Just thowing games sat the wall, see what sticks. It's science, you know. Also, that reminds me, The Orange Box, Portal 2, and if you have the original PS3, Half Life 1 (PS2).

Happy gaming!

Skyrim I have so I've already sunk ours into that, and if that's the case with Mass Effect, do I need to have played the first one in order to get the second?

If you have a PS3, and you don't own the Uncharted series, then you are doing yourself a supreme disservice.

Yeah I never ended up picking up the Uncharted games, but a friend of mine currently has the second and third ones and he's selling all of his gaming stuff at some point soon so I'm probably gonna get those two from him for cheap and I'm sure I can find the first one for like 20$ on amazon or eBay.

I mean, I cannot recommend them enough. I will say that while all the games are of excellent quality, there were some I think subtle tweaks to two's gameplay that make the gameplay a bit better.

This exactly. Right here you've got four of the best games ever made.
FFIX is my favourite game, endlessly replayable and beautiful in every way.
Skyrim is, well, it's Skyrim.
And if you've never played ICO or SOTC you are missing out on two very unforgettable and unique experiences.

Also get Arkham Asylum and Arkham City.

And you can't get ME1 on PS3 but get ME2, the PS3 version has a little catch-up explaining the first one for you.

If you get ME2 then when you start a new game you will have an interactive comic that explains the main highlights from the first game and you can have some choices that do impact your game and I have a ps3 as well and never really played the first ME but the 2nd one is very addicting.
If you like FPS games then I also suggest the resistance games, the first one can be a little harsh but the series is a lot of fun. Uncharted series is also a must for any ps3 owner. Sly cooper collection if you have never played them on the ps2. If you also want an interesting gaming experience then I suggest Heavy Rain, it has QTEs all over the place but how they implement it is really fun plus you do not need to play on the hardest difficulty to enjoy the game.

Alright just to weed out some suggestions that I already own/have played I'll list some games here that I own/have played:
CoD4
Brink
FEAR
FIFA
Portal/Portal 2
Half Life
Half Life 2
Battlefield 3
God of War 1-3
Skyrim
Oblivion
Bioshock
Fallout 1-New Vegas
Grand Turismo 5
Ratchet and Clank, Every game that has ever been made with that series name or associated with it in any way
Jak and Daxter
ICO and Shadow of the Colossus
Resistance Fall of Man -Resistance 3
Uncharted 1-3 (acquiring soon from a friend so I already have money set aside for those)

I think that list should rule out a few previously suggested games.

So from the sounds of it I could just pick up Mass Effect 2 and it will essentially fill me in on what happened in ME without me missing out on too much?

Well for me I do not know about any side missions from the first game that could influence your game in ME2 but for the most part I understand the storyline and the game does a good job explaining what happened, so I will say yes that it will essentially fill you in.
