Mount and Blade Warband is currently keeping me occupied. It's a cross between an RPG and...something else. You kind of have to play it to understand it. The best way to describe it is Morrowind, with Medieval II Total War happening all around you.
You play as a medieval adventurer in a stand in Europe called "Calradia". You go around, doing quests, wooing women, fighting for whichever kingdom takes your fancy. You start off as a lowly weakling, but play it enough and you can become king of the whole land, and you have to work for it too. Unlike a lot of other RPG games, you aren't the mythical "chosen one". You're just an ordinary person, and you have to earn your badassness. You can customize your appearance and origin story, and the levelling up system is a lot like Fallout. You put points into different traits and abilities, there's no predefined classes. It's totally freeform, with no story, or main quest, or any of that. You just do what you need to do to win.
Plus, the combat is amazing. Truly amazing. It's got great sword combat. Think Oblivion, but remove the horrible floaty feeling, and make it fast paced and frenetic and you've got it. It's also the only game I've ever played that does mounted combat right.
I'd really suggest it. Beware though, it's incredibly addictive. I also suggest getting the Diplomacy mod for it.
It's on steam.
