I would sugest getting 350 or 500gb seagate or western digital HD. DVD drive is pretty much w/e you want, just make sure that it has all the features you want on it, such as lightscribe if you need it for something.

For the OS: I would sugjest using vista because your video card can support DX10, also linux or similar type OS is a pain in the neck if your not 100% confident in what your doing.

Personally I use XP, and I'm sticking to that untill I get a DX10 card.

For the OS, I would track down a copy of the Windows 7 beta, which I am using currently, and I refuse to go back to Vista, or waiting until it is actually released.
Depending on the OS you choose, you may want to toss in another gig or two of ram, but that is optional. 8800gt is a solid card, but is getting a little dated, look at your budget and see what you can afford. Power supply looks good, I am a big fan of ASUS, but you might want to shop around a bit on the proc, if you are set on a Core 2, I would look at the E8500. Check out http://www.newegg.com/ and price out what you want.

that would be a good configuration for an XP system, if you want to go to Vista I would agree you'll need more RAM, and I would upgrade the video card as well to take as much stress off the processor as possible. But I partially agree with ILIKECAKE - I would wait until Windows 7 is released. I would not, however, build a new system based on a beta OS - it'll be one huge frustration, seeing as it's a release intended for testing, not for active use.

edit: 200 posts! woohooo!

also, I would think about going with more advanced RAM - I've been running DDR2 for four years now, my next system certainly will have at least DDR3-1066. The increase in bandwidth will be a pleasing upgrade for gaming and overall use.

Okay, well....the motherboard leaves more to be desired, the P5K series is more of a budget board now, go for a P5Q. The E6750, I'm using one of those, and honestly, go with the E8400 or E8500, they're a bit more expensive but give a huge kick. I'd personally use OCZ RAM, but Corsair is alright. As for the GFX card....go for a GeForce 9500 or higher or go for a new ATI. If it's a gaming computer, you want to play games on at least medium settings for the next 2 to 3 years.

I would agree with you about not building a computer for a beta OS if it wasn't for the fact that I have been using it for months with no issues, but still a valid point, and all the more reason to wait for the actual release. The DDR3 RAM is tempting, but unless you invest in a processor that can take advantage of it, there won't be much of a performance gain, but that is just my opinion. I second recommendation for an ASUS P5Q, I am running one now, and am very happy.

Im almost at 200 posts :(

That setup will get really old and slow in less than a year, you need a better cpu & video card.
