Yeah, just found this trailer from 1998. Valve had thought to give animations to Gordon Freeman like a crawl move from Castle Wolfenstein, but they took it out. Other parts, such as the guns being able to take out the huge monsters were taken out because of time constraints.

So the first game could have been 10x as good with these features. Luckily, James Benson found this trailer and put it up for all to see.

What do you think, guys and girls?

This whole video was animated, none of it was actual gameplay. I doubt any game could manage that level of sophistication with the animation with the coding limitations of the late 90's. It just wouldn't work.

They weren't features, ever... this was a teaser trailer.

EDIT:

Also, despite knowing this wasn't HL3 news, I'm still annoyed that you implied it.

Pretty neat, I like that he went with the full body view in first person. Good stuff.

It does look impressive, even for a game in the late 90s, but I doubt they wanted to add this to the actual game. For one, that trailer made it look like the game was going to use cutscenes, when of course there wasn't a single cutscene to be found in the entire game. It just makes you want to be hyped for the game, and I'd say it does a good job.

what is the symbol at 3:30 what they were going to use instead of the black mesa logo?

If Half-Life was 10 times as good as it was back when it was originally released, the world might have ended there and then. Just saying. Some of the stuff (okay, a lot of it) was really smart, like the Tentacle cutting the security guard in half and the way Freeman handled the shotgun.

Guess some of this can be filed alongside things like the Hydra creatures that never made it into Half-Life 2.

No, its Gordon's arm holding a crowbar that's supposed to be in the shape of a lambda, the symbol on the HEV suit.

Also, that actually looked really good. It looks a bit too good to be from the late 90's, though...

I just want to say that a lot of that looked really slow and sort of clunky. I'd imagine, from what I've seen, that Gordon moved a lot more quickly in the real game, instead of flailing his arms around so much.

Indeed. Amazing how many people seem to disregard the disclaimer at the beginning stating that. It's not a new discovered trailer of some cut alpha version, it's just a fan machinima.

Though this does remind me. Black Mesa still doesn't seem to be out yet. Disappointing.

I really enjoyed this video.

I've been subscribed to his channel for quite a while now, and I really suggest anyone to check out his channel! :)

Uh...you do realize that guy wasn't trying to claim this as actual valve content, it was just a series of animations he made for fun? That said, it's pretty awesome to watch, and more reasoning why animations need to be the focus for making games look realistic.

The only idea that did come from Valve was Gordon having his glasses knocked off.

Ya know, during this entire HL series, I always wondered about how his glasses stay on...

BTW, you do realize, my post wasn't all that serious, right? :p

Wow, this is really well made, regardless of the year it was made. This guy really should be making games, or at least cutscenes. I really liked how he had Gordon's arms moving around when crawling through the vent. More games should have that, instead of the floating head most FPSs use.

Whatever, the trailer was really awesome, and I wish the physics worked like that even in source.

Also, I see you people saying this looks too good for the late 90's, when Half-life could be my FAVORITE GAME OF ALL TIME. The game is amazing even by today's standards!

In Half-Life 2: Raising the Bar (a book analyzing Valve's development towards HL2), they mentioned they had an idea for something where the Gonarch's tremors knocked off your glasses, blurring the screen, but for many obvious reasons they cut the idea.
