They had finally gotten it just right with Underworld by scaling back the combat and focusing on platforming and puzzle solving, and now they're going to abandon it for something that looks like it belongs on a bad hand-held platform from 15 yrs ago? bad Crystal Dynamics bad.
But the analogy you've given is absurd. If this were on a handheld 15 years ago it'd probably be sprite-based and visually appealing by pure dint of cartoony stylization. And it'd probably age better than the original Tomb Raider, graphically. In other words, don't go around presuming that being on a portable platform is an insult or ought to be treated that way.
Even unpopular portables like the WonderSwan had their charm, too.
