Okay, I installed Linux Mint 16 on a Macbook Air, and the wifi is PAINFULLY slow, it wasn't like this when it was running the Mac OS X.

I can ping sites easily from the terminal and get healthy responses, and the network window is showing a strong wifi connection. But when I open tabs, they are just completely blank and there is a "Connecting" indicator on the tab that just stays there, very little happens. The tab usually has to be closed and then the link re-opened several times, it's not enough to just stop loading and then reload. It doesn't seem to depend on the site being accessed, and it's pretty random: sometimes it works just fine.

Can anyone help? I've already tried changing the DNS servers to OpenDNS but to no avail...

Any possibility this is related to your router? And are you, by any chance, using a proxy in your browser?

Try to wget the page if the browser is slow - if wget is slow as well then it would help with diagnosing (actually, it would help if wget is fine).

This kinda reminds me of a problem I had on my Gentoo system. Basically the wireless went down when it wasn't used for some time due to powersaving but then never got out of it's sleep state. You said that you can ping sites without problems, is this also true if you watch it for a longer time? In my case it was normal for 30 pings or so and then the response time went up rapidly to something like 3 seconds or so before completely aborting. Also it typically worked if I restarted the wireless connection (releasing connection and then connecting again) for maybe 5 minutes or so before going down again.

Figured it out. I changed the DNS server to 8.8.8.8 and the problem is resolved.

Thanks for the help.
