I wait longer and longer for some kind of DLC to be made for Ashley/Kaiden after the Liara fans got their fix and instead of doing a simple DLC to please part of the fanbase that they have ignored for so long, Bioware go ahead and make a whole new game.

I've got hurt feelings.

Okay but seriously, a first contact war thing could actually be pretty cool. Just as long as there is a reference to Shanxi and General Williams, that would be pretty cool.
Why Ashley she is xenopobic (isn't she?), so she would hate Elites! :(

Can't juge the game with just a trailer.
BUT, if the game is a CoD clone i will be disapointed in bioware. I hope the game has someting else going for it than just being a FPS because we have to many of those as it is.

I hope this is just someone kicking up dust, because I will be very disappointed in Bioware if they feel it's time to dip into the FPS market. They have bigger things to work on (like, maybe that Jade Empire franchise that was supposed to be a trilogy...)

If this is done well it will DOMINATE the charts
I don't necessarily believe that. Mass Effect is loved, and it sells well, but compared to the FPS market leaders, I think Mass Effect would have some trouble grabbing the attention of people. There haven't been a lot of truly new IP's in the FPS market lately, and thats because Call of Duty, Halo, and Battlefield just have a stranglehold of the multiplayer market on consoles.

Maybe I'm alone here, but I'd rather see them take more time on Mass Effect 3 than watch them send a needless FPS out the door right now.

Bah, I'm not a fan of the idea. Smacks too much of the reason for ME2's backslide into 'thermal clips'.

Mind you I'm not much of a shooter fan, but I still think that if they wanna make this into a Mass Effect shooter, since it'll be human-centric, then because ME canon states that there are very few human biotics, they'll most likely cut them entirely. They might have Tech classes but again they'll be limited, so we're left with the soldier class stretched out into another game.

Like we don't have a million of those already.
Well since it's during the First Contact War you'd have the old fashioned no reload guns. I just hope they have vehicles.

If it truly is based around the Turian war then the game is pretty much throwing out the series' only outstanding feature by using such a limited scope. Also I have a feeling that biotics will be hard to balance in pvp.

On the other hand a foray into multiplayer will at least give them the discipline to not make sub-Gears of War level combat mechanics. I'm getting tired of the conversation simulators but I don't think Bioware has demonstrated the skill to make a game that stands up on its combat mechanics.
Yes they did. They made MDK 2.

I can't wait to kill some filthy Turians!
The Space Wizards franchise has needed co-op for a while now.

Why assume that the game would be set during the first contact war, could be Mindoir, that was a major conflict which was followed up with a lot of counter attacks I think?

Seem to recall something in ME/ME 2's codex about the alliance relieving Mindoir and then going on to curb stomp batarians/pirates as a 'warning' .

Hell it could be any number of scenarios since the first game makes it clear than Alliance Marine units get sent to a lot of places for 'recon' and 'other' missions, for example the first time you run into a thresher maw*. Hell, doesn't N7 mean that shep was part of special forces, they must do something beside practice bad ass one liner interrupts and reporter punching.

/edit personally if we are doing spin off games, can I has spaceship commanders plz? Just so I can say "Sir Issac Newton is the deadliest son-of-a-***** in space" A lot and not seem too odd.

*Also screw you bioware and the horse you rode in on, obvious traps are fine but god damn I was always scared to drive the Mako out onto flat open ground anywhere, cuz it was thresher country. probably added about 20 hours to my game time cautiously advancing :(

Why Ashley she is xenopobic (isn't she?)
No, she really isn't. I'd go into more detail but let's just say that she says and does a lot of things that contradict the idea that she is xenophobic, as well as that she actually has the capacity to move past her grudges towards aliens.
Thing is, the whole image of Ashley being this mad angry alien hating racist, is basically just an example of Ron the Death Eater. In which a character is percieved as far worse then they really are by the audience.

To quote what the TV Tropes page says:

"Ashley also gets it from another angle - her (somewhat justified) dislike of other alien races, and Turians especially, comes from the fact that thanks to the Turians, her family name is now essentially mud in the Alliance military. She actually expresses hope for improved relations with the Quarians thanks to Tali's assistance in one case. However, the Hatedom flanderizes her caution into outright, blind, unreasoning hatred."

"New Mass Effect game is possibly COD: First Contact War"

Sorry is this what Activison was planning for the next Call of Duty, because I heard the next COD was space/future warfare?

I'd rather have Mass Effect multiplayer, not another COD. I still haven't hit prestige in Black Ops yet! Geez!

I was hoping that they would go back to being more RPG-like with Mass Effect 3, but then they release this =S

Stop it, Bioware! You are RPG developers, stop trying to become shooter developers....don't mess this up again =S
Perhaps with they'll get the urge to make shooters out of their system with this game, and go back to RPG's with ME3... at least thats what i hope :(

Oh boy ME as COD is made of fail.......
The game hasn't even been announced yet. Save the bashing until you've played it at least.
Considering COD piece has gone down the gutter and ME has been turned into a simple action game as it is...combining the 2 is devideing by zero...(unless its like ME1 only larger levels and more vehicles and more modification of equipment then and only then will be be awesome)tho the gamer zombies will eat it up regardless....

This is a good idea... why?
Call of duty is a solid shooter.

Mass Effect is a solid RPG.

Two and Two make a number.

Though it does sound like it is completely changing the... point of Mass Effect.

For those that know the ME universe Ashley Williams Grandfather fought a guerilla campaign to defend a colony from a Turian invasion during the first contact war. A game set during that would be eighteen kinds of awesome.
would only be worthwhile if you have th option of sacrificing Grandpappy Williams so Ashley will never be born :p
Why? Because if it's something like 'she's racist' you've got a debate coming.

OT: Sounds like a pretty interesting concept so long as they try to improve the shooting machanics a tiny bit.

i hope to god there is at least one gamer out there that understands where im coming from; because frankly this is going to be a massive leap of judgement and sound insanely paranoid, but i just have to say this:

this is paramount to releasing a mass effect racing game. no, its more like someone took my personal vision of hell and to add to the misery turned it into a racing game just to utterly bewilder me in addition to causing unending torment.

i thought my expectations for ME3 were as low as they could be, but before they completely killed the RPG side in favor of a GoW clone with talking, they go and announce... this, ruining ME3 before its even announced.

bioware lost the benefit of the doubt after ME2; i have absolutely no hope that this will do anything less than suck and devalue what little greatness the ME franchise has left. i dont need anymore information; i dont even care if this is a joke; the fact that this could even be joked about is equally as appalling to me.

i think back to baldurs gate, and look at where bioware is now with this announcement....

congratulations Bioware, you are now the michael jackson of video games; where once you were great, you have now gotten so bewildering and into such questionable behaviour that youve managed to completely alienate your original fans. from king of pop to childish weirdo, you have similarly gone from premier RPG developer to making a multiplayer FPS nobody wanted.

i really REALLY hope this isnt true; in fact, i hope it is in actuality a mass effect racing game. anything, ANYTHING at all would be better than an online shooter from bioware...

im going to stop now, though there is a thousand other problems i have with this. you might say im overreacting, but understand that i now have to turn to japan if i ever want a real RPG now. my last bastion of quality gaming has been reduced to dime-a-dozen JRPGS. this is depressing beyond imagination.

im going to go replay baldurs gate now; remind me of the era of gaming that didnt disappoint me at every single turn.

A CoD-like Mass Effect game, with online shooter components?
This... could be interesting. And successful.
If they do it right.
Plus, first contact war... Turians... Humans... sci-fi...
*Possibly drools a little*
I dont see why everyone thinks that be so awesome.

Mass Effect is a game about badass Commanders flying and doing cool stuff and saving the galaxy.

Nothing really 'big' happens in its backstory, other than the First Contact War, which if you actually look at it lasted for a short time and was mainly a couple quick decisive battles.
I really personally think a full game would not do well in this setting.

What I mean by it being 'not awesome' is the setting would prevent it to be so, but the game itself? Online focused, Call of Duty style? Done right it would be at the very best brilliant, at the very least interesting.

Anyways, I know this may sound harsh but I just think that there is no potential in ME's mentioned so far backstory for an entire game, I think that the alien races themselves need to be expanded rather than briefly mentioned events.
