New Max Payne 3 Trailer Sets the Scene

The new Max Payne 3 trailer is hot and wants to be dangerous.

When I heard that the third iteration of Max Payne would be fat, bald and Brazilian, I had doubts. Serious doubts. But now I'm feeling better. Now, instead of worrying about the game, I just want to play it.

You can blame this trailer for that. Max - tormented and twisted because he couldn't save her - finds himself desperately racing to save the life of another beautiful woman, killing his way from one end of Sao Paulo to another while forces beyond his ken conspire behind the scenes. It's not New York City in the dead of winter, but that's still about as Payne-ful as it gets.

That was my concern too, but this trailer really "feels" like Max Payne. That's a very vague assertion, I know, and it's easy to craft specific impressions with promotional trailers, but I watch this and think, yup. That's Max Payne. He's older, he's in Brazil, but he's still Max.

Very few trailers get me legitimately excited for a game, but this one has definitely done it.

Really? It all seemed pretty noir to me. Neue-noir, perhaps, but the flavour is definitely there.

I find it slightly amusing that while fans of a series will typically flip tables over a new take on their favorite franchise (see: Bioshock: Infinite, DMC, Max Payne 3, that one game with the aliens) more often than not the newer versions seem just fine once actual gameplay footage starts coming out.

And worrying about Max Payne 3's plot/noir credentials seems awfully bizarre considering Rockstar has been making games with neo-noir themes for a while now. The fact that their last game has NOIRE in the flipping title might be a tip-off that, hey, Rock Star enjoys noir.

I still struggle to understand what's Max's motivation in all this. There doesn't seem to any reason other than a female is involved. why does Max care?

At the end of MP2, he seem happy, he accepted what had happened, he was essentially happy for once "And in that act of seeing, I am reborn"...His words.

Noir is a lot more than just darkness. Just pay attention to the narration, to the voice acting, that sort of thing. It's even more evident in previous trailer. MP3 will be noir alright.

I think he explains in previous trailers.

Isn't that the good ending? Because Rockstar has already confirmed on using the bad ending as the canon one.

That's a transition I'm struggling with too. Hope the story can properly justify it.

That is true, but it does have a part in it, hell "noir" literally means black in french.
Only dark levels, along with blurry comic-book transitions, metaphoric lines and really creepy/hilarious dialogue differentiated it from an average shooter.
Also i get the feeling that i won't like combat for some reason, maybe its just that seems so different seeing Max run forward and shoot at the target instead of strafe.

The bad ending? I can't exactly remember what that was.

Then again it's been years since I played MaxP with his painkiller madness

That it does, but noir goes a lot deeper than that. Just look at this:
Night time? Nope, though there will be night time levels, as I have no doubt that those favela's at night can be pretty damn spooky and it'd be a shame to waste that opportunity, but it still oozes noir to me if not in a traditional sense.

As for the combat, this fills me with hope:
The constant diving in the old MP games sort of took the awesomeness out of doing so to me, like doing a ton of leap of faith's in AC makes them less special as well. Going by this video, they seem to mix things up a bit more, and I find that promising.

In all honesty, I was excited when I first heard that Max was gonna be a fat bald drunk. I thought that was a brilliant way to change a character who is supposed to be wallowing in depression.

This look is pretty cool. I would have been satisfied with how they were gonna originally play him out, but this is cool as well.

I'm pretty excited for this game. It's been in development for a long ass time as well, so it should turn out pretty good.

Edit: Oh, and he looks like Walter White. I think that's where a lot of my excitement is coming from.

I'm worried this is just a cash in,
Can people please stop saying this? All it does is show how little you know about the industry. A developer like Rockstar makes what they want to make when they want to make it because they want to make it, you don't put millions of dollars and your development team into a project just for some quick cash.

All I can think of about Max Payne 3 is how Remedy didn't have the balls to keep it, but sold it to Rockstar. They neither ever held their PC promises with Alan Wake after a quickie on the backseat with Microsoft.

Same selling-out thing with Bugbear's Flatout games. At least it seems like Rovio is never going to let go of Angry Birds. But still, the very few things a Finn can be proud of on the global field of gaming, feel more American than an apple pie, and almost seem to be ashamed of where they come from, and to top it off, they sell out at the first lucrative spot.
