So, my faithful mouse that's been with me for about a year and a half now is dying. *sniff*
Can any of my fellow escapists recommend a decent gaming mouse? I've heard the Mx-518 is good, but I thought I'd ask here first, because I know so very little about mice...

It's weird, but I actually like using a trackball for gaming. My friends can't stand them, but I think it's easier to play with.

Microsoft G500 has gotten good reviews or the Microsoft x5 Sidewinder is the one I have, and its pro.

my Microsoft Habu is still alive after 2 years of beating, and I did not check new models, if you can find something similar to that I recommend it

What kind of deformed monstrosity is that?!

I have a Razer DeathAdder and I love it. It's pretty sensitive so I had to turn the sensitivity down a lot but it works great. Plus it glows blue, so that's a plus. Also, it's pretty simple with only left click, right click, scroll wheel, and two side buttons that I use for my mic so it's not too busy and overloaded with buttons.

It's a trackball mouse!
It doesn't move, you put it on your desk, place your hand on it as if it were a normal mouse, but you put your thumb on the big red ball. To move the cursor you move the ball around with your thumb. It's great once you get used to it. And as long as you don't get food on it it won't get stuck.

I should probably have mentioned price, because I'm a penniless student, so I wouldn't be going too far over ?35 or so. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions!

I don't think I'll be re-learning a whole new control method now, it was hard enough getting the hang of a regular mouse!
Though I can honestly say I've never seen anything like that before, so in that respect it's pretty cool!

Yea, it does take a while to get used to. Only reason I use it for gaming now is because I got my first computer that was compatible with games with one, so I had it from the get-go. But, it took me a while to get used to simple tasks on the internet. Trust me though, once you get used to it it's so much easier. It's a lot easier to move the crosshair slight bits to the left and right that make the difference between headshot and giving away your posistion.

It's hard to imagine it being accurate when the ball is so tiny, I just imagine it being clunky like an analogue stick. Or am I missing something? Not having to lift the mouse of the pad would be handy though...

The ball is actually pretty big. You remember those bouncy balls "Super Balls" or something like that right? They're a bit smaller than that. And the ball doesn't move like the scoller on a mouse. There are some sort of trackers that track how you move it. It isn't clunky at all, it's actually really free. It's sort of hard to explain, but when you go to Best Buy or whatever just ask if they have any samples you could see.

Logitech G5s are sturdy and long lasting, but most importantly awesome.

They don't have some weird funky shape either, they're just like a normal shaped mouse, but it's good.

It has lights and buttons on it, that's worth mentioning.
