It actually did work for them in a way. The total lifetime sales of the SEGA Saturn were only 9.5 million units, while the Dreamcast sold a total of 10.6 million. What killed Sega was how they launched the Saturn, that's what truly killed them in the end, that and the 32X and Sega CD. The Dreamcast was doing wonderful, but the problem was that Sony announced the PS2 and people waited for that. They then lost the Japanese market because the PS2 in Japan was a cheap and affordable DVD player, which the Dreamcast was not.VG_Addict said:"Nintendo should kill the Wii U and release a new console!". (Because that worked SO well for Sega when they killed the Saturn).
Except Sega pissed off a lot of consumers by prematurely killing a console. The same would happen to Nintendo if they killed off the Wii U.Neronium said:It actually did work for them in a way. What I'm saying is that Dreamcast isn't what killed Sega, it was the Saturn that did.
While yes they did that, the fact that the Dreamcast still sold more than the Sega Saturn shows how easily people seem to forget. Hell, look at the Xbox One, with everything Microsoft has done up to the launch the Xbox One still has sold 3.9 million when only out for 2 months...>.>VG_Addict said:Except Sega pissed off a lot of consumers by prematurely killing a console. And that wasn't the first time Sega did that. The Sega CD and 32x were killed off pretty quick too which led to a LOT of issues. Basically a company is stuck with hardware no matter what once it's released and killing it off doesn't really do any good for anyone involved. It's about time people get over the Wii U. It's here and it's going to STAY here.VG_Addict said:Except Sega pissed off a lot of consumers by prematurely killing a console. The same would happen to Nintendo if they killed off the Wii U.
I'm not saying the Wii U has to go. I'm just saying that what really killed SEGA were the Saturn, 32X and Sega CD. The Dreamcast didn't kill Sega, in fact if they had made some better decisions it could have gone a bit longer perhaps.Aiddon said:And that wasn't the first time Sega did that. im not saying that being bundled outright means its a useless game, however when talking about "best selling game" i usually ignore bundled games because sometimes they have high numbers solelty on bundles and another game that people bought that wasnt bundled (and yet still sold spectacular) may have actually been the true "best seller" out there. For example Super Mario Bros is best selling mario game mostly due to fact that every console came with one.Full Metal Bolshevik said:Wii Sports didn't came bundled in Japan and still sold almost 4 million. Wii Sports resort did have a wii bundle alternative, but their 30+ million is still nothing to ignore.
