Whenever I play a fantasy RPG, I tend to play a warrior just long enough to learn how not to die, and then I start over with a Mage. My favorite character from Oblivion was Magnolia, a Breton to avoid the weakness to magicka that Altmer have. She was a mage with the mage birthsign, but I took steps to get her blade, block, athletics and acrobatics to usable levels. So she could still fight if she needed to.

A mage is vulnerable to silence spells, but if you carry dispel potions with you you'll be okay.

Then I decided to do a wierd thing, and see how perfectly I could level a character up. I made a character with the Thief birthsign and luck and endurance as their main atributes; endurance is useful to have higher early and luck is hard to level up. I chose one skill from each attribute as my major skills, I think it was: Acrobatics, Alchemy, Blade, Armorer, Marksman, Mercantile and Restoration. I chose the ones that were easiest to control leveling up, or that would be the most useful to have at higher levels at the beginning of the game. Then I leveled luck up one each level, and picked two attributes to focus on to get each to 100, starting with strength and endurance. I made it to about level 18 before I got bored and started playing Fallout 3. Oh, and it doesn't matter what race, but I chose a Nord. Any of the not-exclusively-magick-types would work just as well.

Argonians are a brilliant class to go if you want a stealthy game. Light Armour, Blade, Block, Armourer, Sneak, Marksman are essential, though you don't get a bonus for picking Armourer, it's just one of those skills where it really helps to get a head start with.

My first playthrough I chose an Orc and did the regular warrior stuff - although foolishly I picked a pre-made class that had Blade, Blunt and Hand to Hand. Although this has worked out quite a bit better than I originally thought. Fist-fighting and ogre never gets old.

Nord.
Sign of the mage as it actally lets you go beyond stat limits. (Normally your mp is int x 2)
Specialized stats: INT and END. (High HP MP and whatever the green bar is called.
Specialized growth: magic because it takes forever to raise otherwise.
Skills: Blunt, heavy armor, Armorer, Destruction, restoration, conjuration and block.

My favorite setup:

Race - Bosmer (Wood Elf)
Type - Stealth
Favored Attributes - Strength and Endurance (for the boost to carrying capacity and max HP)
Major Skills:
Alteration
Armorer
Illusion
Light Armor
Marksman
Restoration
Sneak

I play the character as the ultimate stealth machine and aim to get 100% Chameleon (aka "the I Win Button") during gameplay. Every skill's got a reason to exist:

Alteration - I prefer it to Security as a means of opening locks for a couple of major reasons. One, Alteration isn't JUST for picking locks---a good Shield spell is a great safety valve. And two, Security can be hard to level up beyond about 50-55 or so if you're any good at the minigame.

Armorer - Fixing weapons and armor, of course, but also for the boost to Endurance and subsequent boost to HP that I get (I use KCAS rather than the game's built-in vanilla system) as it levels up.

Illusion - Enemy got you cornered? Situation looks dire? Cast Invisibility and get the hell out of there! Useful later when the time comes for maximum-strength Chameleon as a custom spell can supplement Chameleon-enchanted items.

Light Armor - Especially in the early going, a little protection goes a long way. Huge help with regulating level progression as well---any time I need skillbuilding there's always a mudcrab around somewhere that I can let beat up on me for a bit.

Marksman - Once it gets to 50 the sniper scope is just plain ridiculous, and a good first shot goes a long way.

Restoration - Potions are a ***** to carry.

Sneak - Master Sneak has the best perk in the game, especially past level 20---it ignores (or more accurately, reduces to 1) the enemy's armor rating on critical hits. Combine with strong Chameleon and it's like having the difficulty slider all the way to the left (and, if you're the type who already has the difficulty slider all the way to the left, well...)

REDGUARD / WOOD ELF

heavy armor /Light Armor
athletics /Blade
blade /Marksman
block /Armorer
sneak /Sneak
armorer /Armorer

FOR HEAVY ARMOR:

just go get the kngihts stronghold
and as soon as u start the character, go
west of chorrol
and get full steel.

FULL LIGHT ARMOR

when u start, go to leyaiwiin an leave west.
head out going
northwest, until on ur minimap shows
the ruins symbol. its not to far out.
then enter the ruin barous amillian or
whatever his name is. it has a full set
of armor, including the sword.
make sure u have nothing in ur inventory,
or take 2 trips. minor combat.
FULL SET make sure to look around!

Wood Elfs work quite well for assassins since they have the most bonuses to Markmen and Sneak. I'm short in real life anyway so I can get past being half the hight of most the NPCs.

Always fun to watch the heavy armored swords swinging thicks paint the wall with their blood by a small cloth armored Elf.

That was actually my thought process when I decided to use light armor. Glass armor looks cool.

Not if the silence doesn't come from a spell proper. If it's a lesser power, which wraiths have and it's the most common way you'll get Silenced, you're stuck until the time runs out.

My favorite:

The Ninja Mage!

Illusion
Sneak
Destruction
Blade
Alchemy
Acrobatics
Block

Go for something like Breton/Mage for race/sign.

Only wear enchanted clothing, no armor, so you have 100% spell efficiency. Most importantly, 100% spell efficiency means max strength illusion spells work regardless of level. You can frenzy, dominate, or fear just about anything. Remaining hidden while you throw a large area frenzy spell into a group of unsuspecting enemies is just glorious. Then get down to stabbing and blasting enemies. It's great fun.

I love to play a thief. Load up on lockpicks, scout the houses, break in and steal everything that isnt nailed down >:) I have made several thousand gold so far just from robbing the houses in Bruma.
I steal everything that isn't bolted down AND on fire.

Anywho I primary a Khajiit.

Sneak
Marksmanship
Acrobatics
Blade
Light Armor
Mercantile
Security

You'll be able to steal everything that isn't bolted down and on fire, in broad daylight, while it's snowing with the blackest of black armor on

and if you do it right you'll never take a single blow during combat

You got me. I lied. I never carried around dispel potions. It was usually just enough to dodge. Or hide for a while if I did get hit.
