I just happened upon this article concerning a patent filed by IBM that proposes tech for a suit of "bionic body armor" that would, in theory, help the wearer dodge bullets.

What do you guys think? Viable tech, or just a pipe dream? I think they might be on to something...

There's SO much wrong with this idea.

Apart from the speed needed to avoid a projectile, the problem of sending a muscle into spasm at a specific time, the strain on the body, the idea of the system misinterpreting, the attempt at trying to avoid a bullet heading directly at your body, being hit by shrapnel, getting it wet...

The only use I can see for this is as an instrument of torture.

I wanna be the one who gets to try and shoot whoever is the first to test this suit out. Hopefully the suit isnt bulletproof.

If the sensors are too sensitive, wouldn't it make the wearer 'spaz out' (for the lack of a better, more PC term) in the rain?

It would detect every raindrop as an incoming projectile and try to make the wearer avoid them, making them do some crazy dance or something.

I can imagine there would be no end of fun and practical jokes to be had with people wearing them. Like if your buddy was wearing one on patrol in Iraq, and was walking past a steaming pile of camel shit, you could throw a coin at him and laugh as the suit makes him take a 'dirt nap'.

Maybe whit a sniper at a VERY long distance, but a suit being able to actually know the path of the bullet, where it's gonna hit, where it comes from, and then actually making the dude dodge it, No.

Uh. Wouldn't this tear muscles apart?

Also, I do not recommend visiting that website, my Chrome freaked out on me.

Exactly my thought on all of those points, you would be lucky if the suit doesn't break you, but at least we can dream, maybe some time later in the future when it is refined and safe.

So which would you rather experience? Violent muscle spasms, or getting shot?

Would it work if you threw a ball at someone wearing it? You should link this to the taser thread...

Its a pretty awesome concept, but like some said before, i dont think that the Human body would be able to take that much strain after a while. Good if it worked though.

This is quite interesting but if they ever get this into production there seems to be an easy way round this. just shoot the receiver, or whatever that is that looks like a dish, then they are screwed. Also I can see the armour being either really insensitive or super sensitive the most humorous being the latter with the soldiers being thrown around at the sign of a stone being kicked at their leg.

If it's a choice between getting shot or wearing that deathtrap, I'd think I'd be better off with the bullet. The payoff would be a lot easier to deal with.

Problem is it'l just hurt you, it won't actually dodge the bullet.
