Before the hype train sets off, it's only a special and not a full series. Ash will still be around for the time being. =(
Could you back that up, by chance? Because from what I see it looks like this will go at least until Drake and the Champion fight, so it seems like it's willing to go the entire way there.
Unless of course it goes the way of cutting out everything other than the important bits like Gym Battles, then that would make sense.
I got it from Serebii:

http://www.serebii.net/anime/epiguide/specials/032.shtml

It states that Red is going to face Team Rocket at Pokemon Tower, but no mention of the Pokemon League except for Brock. It does say thet it's a special though, so I don't think there's something wrong with that.

The way that's written is that he'll fight a lot of gym leaders, shown being Brock.
And since they went through the trouble of animating a Drake and a Green in a room that looks like an Elite Four chamber, I'd say it's more than just a special.
"...battle many opponents. As he travels through the region, he battles his rival, Green, Gym Leaders such as Brock..." being the key phrasing there.
Besides, it's not unlike Serebii to miss things.

I'm hoping it's a bit more like the games, with trainers being competent at managing elemental weaknesses and strengths, Pokemon being caught as opposed to befriended, evolution being a goal in a Pokemon's growth as opposed to some arbitrary thing that seemingly doesn't affect combat potential, etc.

It's about Red, and he picked Charmander like a fucking man. Consider me hyped!

I thought the hero in those old games was meant to be Ash, I mean there was even a version of the game where you'd have a lil' pikachu following you around.

Welp, goes to show how out of touch I am with Pokemon then. That said the announcer in that trailer was hilarious.

[HEADING=1]
"THE ORIGIN!!!!11!!!"

Also I now feel the incredible urge to go listen to the original game tunes on youtube. Catchy stuff that!

So it is, to some degree, an adaptation of the Pokemon Special manga?

Whens it happening? Nevermind, i watched the trailer and while i cant read Japanese i can still correlate those numbers with either 2nd of October, or 10th of Feburary.

it just got weird.
Especially with Ash being unexplainably imortal Peter Pan, to which every companion that tags along with him achieves their life's dream... once they finally get away from him. Expect for Brock, he got away and was roped back in.

Also, why hasn't Thunder Armor become a move already? Because I would use the hell out of it, but with our luck it would probably be a crappy defensive move.
It probably would be a move that can only be used in a double or triple battle, yeah.

I have no idea what the Eternal Adventure of Ash and Pikachu is actually doing currently, but this looks... so fuckin' cool.

Definitely gonna check it out.

Also, that announcer's English was really good. He dropped the accent and everything.

Yeah, it's October 2nd. It mentions the games Red and Green in the trailer a few times, but not the manga at all as far as I can tell, so it doesn't seem like it'll be based on the manga. The manga is probably a bit too intense to be made into a movie or series anyway, I know they really try to stay away from Pokemon dying or being killed nowadays, and in the manga there are some pretty brutal battles.

This looks really cool though, and I really hope it becomes a proper series, as I feel a special would be too rushed and I'd like to see them really flesh it out. A Pokemon anime with a competent lead character who doesn't just give all his best Pokemon away for no reason would be a dream come true.

Calm down, its just a TV special. Although, if it does really well, who knows? Perhaps they'll look at manga adaptations (Oh my Arceus, YES)?

I was thinking more like a male version of Oprah, but Peter Pan works too.

"When you walk away from me look in your bag! It's your dream! Dreams for everybody! :D"

I actually feel bad for Brock. Poor guy never got what he wanted and when he kinda did it went badly for him, and I blame Ash since clearly he's a bad luck charm.

I would love to see this replace the current Pokemon show, I stopped watching it when they got rid of all the original voice actors, plus Ash is a stupid fucking moron, so there's that.

...why? I haven't watched the last several seasons of Pokemon, but the originals were not good. They were copy-paste formulaic toy advertisements that were insulting to children's intelligence and I hope they don't return to that, if they ever left it. I hope they take this opportunity to make it significantly better.

To be fair, I was talking about going towards the franchise roots (i.e. going back towards the game's storyline rather than Ash and Co do random stuff). While the game's storyline wasn't fascinating, this looks like it can be a good special.

Smogon player in me...

Chairzard was and continues to be the most useless of the three starters, being weak to the first gym and quad weaknesses to stealth rock in later generations. Obviously he should have...

*Strangles smogon self*

I think it is cool. The anime has never had very good writing, just being a "what pokemon shall we stitch a story together this week and what huge gameplay mistake shall we make this time?"

We get this, but not an adaptation of the Pokemon special manga.

The one widely known as "the good one".

Come on, humanity. Give me this one thing.

This comic always comes to mind when I think about it:

Mostly though it was the unresolved plot threads, like what the fuck the GS Ball was and what happened that traumatised Brock? So many questions that were never answered.
