Okay heres the deal. I can afford a new psp if I trade in my old fatty (original) psp. Now, my current one runs...okay but its pretty beat up and has problems sometimes. So my question for yall is this : Should I buy a new PSP or wait for the NGP? My problem with waiting for the NGP is that I would likely ask for it for a Christmas present (assuming the projected release time stands) so I would get one of the first models. Given Sony's recent history with releases being overpriced and often bug riddled I question whether it is a good idea or not. Any opinions are appreciated.

I say go for it, especially if you still use it relatively often. It's still a pretty long time til Christmas, so it's not like you won't use it much between now and then. And sometimes you just need to treat yourself, the PSP3000 is smoother and quieter than all the previous iterations and it loads a hell of a lot faster. I couldn't live without my PSP to be honest, there are just so many awesome games for it if you can read Japanese relatively well. If not, there's always Nippon Ichi Software who release an steady stream of new games for it. I highly recommend you try out Prinny and Prinny 2, it's just so much fun dood!

How about wait for the NGP and then buy a discounted PSP on sale.
Sell the old busted one asap if you can.

I'd say wait for the NGP. Especially if you're planning on eventually getting it - might as well not spend money on another PSP.

Get a PSPGo, not more hassling with UMDs and it's easier to carry around to boot!

Okay, enough laughing -- get a new one now (not a Go). The NGP is months away at least, and will likely not be backwards compatible with UMD games (PSN games... likely IMO). You might as well trade up while you can.

New PSP.

I believe the NGP isn't going to support UMD.

And a lot of games aren't on the PSN store for some fucking reason.

Get a 3000 model. The faster load times are clearly noticeable.

I ended up going with a 3000. I had a bunch of old games I found spring cleaning that I traded in + my old psp. I figure this way I can wait for the NGP to drop in price (or at least have most of the bugs/issues ironed out) and I will have a UMD player since the NGP won't support it. I still have a couple UMDs that I play but I plan on going primarily with digital now in preparation for the NGP.

What? Then it is practically non-backwards compatible. Looks like I'll have to keep my PSP.

Yep. You can use all the digital games you get for it but not UMDs.

I don't have any digital games. I prefer physical copies. Sigh.......

After the PS2/PS3 debacle, you expected them to make an effort for backwards compatibility here? :D

It kinda sucks, yeah. Here's hoping they at least leave it region-free (thanks for nothing, Nintendo).

Another big question for me is if this means they'll be able to offer games physically and digitally at the same time, rather than randomly adding stuff to the PSN whenever the mood takes them. Of course, looking at how many games they were supposed to bring over from the PS1 compared to how many actually got there.. eh. We'll see.

Basically he said they were in talks with publishers about making digital downloads available. This raises two potential problems though first will this require said games be repurchased and secondly some publishers won't care/do it.

I've got a 2000, and its triangle button is broken. I don't have as much free access to buy stuff as many of you do, so I'm going to wait until the NGP comes out to switch. I actually got it for my birthday 2 or 3 years ago, so I'm not the least surprised. And I tend to only use it for music, videos, and Spyro 1.

Btw I kinda think "PSP2" kinda sounds stupid. It makes it sound like Sony made a pocket PS2. And Sony made it clear that NGP is meant to succeed the PSP, not be another installment.

Get a PSP now to satisfy your desires. Wait for the NGP to get cheaper.

I would wait until e3ish. Will get us a bunch more details on everything. Or a lack of details to push you in the way of the 3000.

especially if my current system is in working shape.

But wait - a lot of PSP games are already on PSN. Couldn't people just download those from PSN?

And I don't remember ever hearing anyone say anything about PS2 games that were going to be ported to the PSP2 (I refuse to call it the Neo Geo Pocket, that name's already taken!)
Well first I want to say I miss read your first statement. I thought you were asking about PsP games (IE UMDs) rather than PS2, so my initial comment doesn't really apply. That being said, the "rumor" is that anything you can download from the PSN can be run on the NGP (PSP2)
