Alright, now I understand the escapist has to fund itself, despite the fact it has the subscription based publishers club that it likes to pretend doesn't exist when claiming money woes, ads are necessary.

But apparently background ads, top page banner ads (resulting in ugly white gaps), cpatcha ads, and little inline ads simply aren't enough, now we have these obtrusive as hell ads right before videos telling me to type crap in as well. Normally, that wouldn't bother me, as some might know I disagree with the escapists policy on ad-blockers (especially the wording in the code of conduct), but they can't be blocked, unlike with youtube.

Worst of all, which is my reason for disliking a lot of escapist advertising, it isn't even related to games, I started playing EVE because of an escapist ad so gaming ads aren't so bad.. but at the moment I have an add for some TV program.. I don't even own a TV. I thought we were in the days of adsense. Either way, it's honestly making me not want to visit the Escapist anymore since most of the content I could find on youtube anyway, am I the only one with an issue with this? Overreacting perhaps?

When has The Escapist complained about money woes? The only time I ever even heard them mention money was during the Extra Credits problems and according to The Escapist, the system has been changed to an ad-revenue based system that will allow them to completely avoid those issues...

As to your question, I'm not really able to comment on how bad the ads are getting but I will anyway cause I do what I want! Take THAT society!

Background and side ads I never understood the issue with. If it's ugly, what does it matter (unless it's making noise in which case I'll grab a torch and join you in the angry mob...well...I won't because I don't see them but I'll be there in spirit)? Same with getting ads for stuff you don't care about; that's usually automatic through a marketing company so chances are The Escapist doesn't even see that stuff before it's kicked out. Whoever pays gets the spot.

Captcha exists to attempt to curb SPAM-bots and as long as people have to do the Captcha stuff, you might as well make some cash off of it. I know before I Pubclubbed, I HATED doing the old Capthca's because you couldn't read the stupid things half the time. I'd much rather have ad-based ones that let me actually read them over the old system. However, your disagreement with Ad Block is exactly WHY they have to introduce things like video-based ads.

People using Ad Block means that The Escapist isn't getting paid. Therefore, they introduce something that Ad Block can't block.
