Oh I just looked them up on youtube once and didn't like it. It seemed a bit too intense with no real purpose for me.

I guess that's ironic coming from a Converge fan.

Actually I've just looked them up again and it sounds better than before. I might need to give them a full listen.
Haha, your Converge comment made me laugh. HORSE's older material is difficult because of the unpolished sound and pretty crappy vocals. I mean, I like it, but I know why others wouldn't. As for A Natural Death and Desperate Living, these two albums show the maturity of HORSE and actually have some incredibly philosophical themes running throughout. I love the challenge that their music gives me, and they're also one of the hardest touring bands ever...although every bands tends to say that about themselves so take that with a pinch of salt.

That band (what was it? RX bandits?) sounds very similar to Birds of Tokyo. I only listen to them every now and then, as a bit of a nice change. can see that band taking the same role. Nice :)
Sorry, I have to disagree. They're nothing alike. Both are mellow at times, yes but RX Bandits have a much more complex sound. They're pretty much a prog-ska/rock band with the crazy shit they do with their songs... Check out the other songs off of Mandala and ...The Battle Begun. One of their songs - It's Only Another Parsec - was on one of the guitar hero games:

Obviously if it's not your thing then it doesn't matter, I just wanted to highlight how different they are to Birds of Tokyo. I hope we can still be friends = P

Also, how out of place does the vocalist look whilst singing this song!

The make me think of TDEP mixed with electronic elements, minus Greg Puciato's insane vocals

i love albums to listen to as a whole but i think you'll find metal a shallow well for such albums. I've found generally the length of metal tracks by enlarge encourages tracks to be better singularly contained.

but if you can spare 28 minutes Pink Moon By Nick Drake, this album is beautiful. Cool wistful guitar work by a man holding on by his finger nails, recorded over two late night sessions you can really feel the insomnia which gave birth to the haunting and ethereal album about a journey through night. Its vaguely Keatsian so if you like Romantic era poetry Pink Moon will strike a chord with you.

But if you're set on heavier stuff(some of which is punk)
Pink flag-the wire
I'm stranded-the Saints
Live and Dangerous-Thin Lizzy
One Day as a Lion(ep)
Redcoats(ep)
No Sleep till Hammersmith-Motorhead
Ritual De lo Habitual-Janes Addiction
Dig me out-Sleater Kinney
Roots-Sepultera
American Beauty-The grateful dead
Cheap thrills-Big brother and the holding company
Three imagenary boys-the Cure,
Fire up the blades-three inches of blood
and Rage against the machine's debut if you havn't heard it.

(if you have moral issues with downloading you may have trouble finding a few on CD, but Vinyls better anyway for album listening)

It sounds like you'd like Ludo, specifically "The Broken Bride EP"

This is my favorite from the CD:

Hrm, I guess, but HORSE definitely don't have as fucked up time signatures as The Dillinger Escape Plan.

Here's a band I came across a couple of years ago that may interest you...although judging from our conversation, maybe not. They've got some crazy time signatures but aren't as heavy as Dillinger. Great lyrics throughout their album...Let's see what you and @theseworlds make of Blakfish. This song's about parking restrictions and congestion charges within London.

Just noticed that whoever posted the video on youtube spelt the band's name wrong lol.

Given your own preferences I give you... and yes, one or two of these have been mentioned before.

Ayreon is the name Arjen Lucassen gives to his rock operas (usually double albums, and therefore all concept albums). Sort of hard to pick out one song to highlight this, but here goes.

Opeth are very much prog. Their albums tend to vary a bit in overall style, but I can honestly say I feel that all of them are worth listening to.

Primordial is celtic black metal, with the occassional proggy element.

And last but not least... Mirrorthrone. I'm uncertain how to classify, but I love it.

Children Of Bodom? Just their old stuff, e.g. anything before Hate Crew Deathroll.

Maybe The Word Alive.
Yay, I'm not the only one that thinks CoB was better before Latvala :D

Edge of Sanity - Crimson
Edge of Sanity - Crimson II

Both concept albums, both albums that must be listened to in one sitting, the first album is just one long track.
The two most incredible metal albums after The Great Misdirect.
I'm listening to Crimson right now. At first, I had to blink a few times to make sure my eyes weren't deceiving me. 40 mins!?!? And it's only 1 song? Wow. I'm impressed. I like it so far, will definitely keep listening.

Thanks man :)
If you want to go for sheer song length, try Sleep's "Dopesmoker". One track. 65 minutes.

Also, I'll second/third the Dream Theater suggestions. Start with "Metropolis pt 2: Scenes from a Memory" and then go from there however you like. My other recommendation would be Porcupine Tree. Try their albums "Deadwing" or "Fear of a Blank Planet".

Animals as Leaders (self titled first album) = insanely awesome prog/metal/djent- stuff. They're supporting a BTBAM show near me soon too :D

Make sure to listen to that whole song, then Tempting Time.

Tool, TesseracT, Periphery, The Human Abstract are good proggy bands.

Also, Muse: Origin of Symmetry or Muse: Absolution are both really good albums. Much better than their more recent stuff IMO...

Origin of Symmetry is a masterpiece...I consciously avoid their newer stuff. Although I really like Knights of Cydonia. = D

Hmm, a lot of people seemed to have already mentioned what I would have suggested but if you're looking for Progressive Metal, might I also reccomend Death, Ihsahn and Cynic:

Breaking Benjamin's album called Phobia is pretty great and if you like it you would probably like their others. That's their best album to me though.
Also, A Thousand Suns by Linkin Park is great too. It is an extremely diverse album and I think you need to listen to it as a whole to realize how complete the album is.
Edit: Also, if you like rap even a little bit you MUST listen to Kanye West's My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy. It has a lot of great instrumental stuff mixed into it and I can honestly say that I love every single song on it.

Fucking nostalgia alert when I listened to those three songs. I've misplaced my copy of it and haven't heard any of those songs in so many years... New Born remains one of my favourites...

Both of those songs were really good. Couldn't get enough of the After the Burial song. Very similar to Born of Osisis (maybe that's the Sumerian records curse)

Cheers mate :)

If you can check out more songs by both bands, they're both really good :). You should also check out Oh, Sleeper:

Ha! I got this album a few days ago. It's fantastic! The rawness of his screams aren't what I usually go for, but it mixes with the guitars so darn well. Lovin' this album :)
