I never actually called Super Mario Kart Wii garbage, but I suppose if you need to manipulate my words to make your point, then that is your right to do so. But I do see your point. 2D vs. 3D mario on the same console isn't really a fair comparison, whereas 2D vs. 2D on different consoles is completely valid. That's why super mario 64 is the 2nd best-selling game on the virtual console (ahead of the vaunted SMB3), and super paper mario (which was predominantly 2d platforming) didn't sell nearly as well as mario galaxy. Wait... I'm sorry, that doesn't prove your point at all. Quite the opposite, in fact. There are more than double the number of DSes than Wiis. Still think New Super Mario Bros. Wii will sell comparably to its cousin on the DS?Georgeman said:Nice try, but WRONG! Let me see where I begin with this:
1) Mario Kart was NOT bundled with anything else other than a Wheel. That's all. If you happened to see any "specialized" packages in various stores, that was not Nintendo's strategy. Keep in mind that Grand Theft Auto IV had bundles too.
2) Mario 2nd and Mario 3d are NOT the same games and the sales reflect that. 2d Super Mario Bros has always sold significantly better than 3d Mario.
3) Calling Wii Fit, Wii Play and Wii Sports "garbage" makes you heavily biased. If that's what people want to buy and play, who are you to call it garbage?
4) Fast sales ARE an issue with games. Many games happen to fall in price just a few months later. We have Platinum Games the same year that those games were released (I look at you, Killzone 2.) Now, look at the so called "garbage": Mario Kart, New Super Mario Bros DS, Wii Fit, Wii Play, Wii Sports. No price drop, they still sell for full price, they still give Nintendo a crapload of money.

As for the games I actually did refer to as "gimmicky garbage", if your definition of a well-constructed game is a collection of admittedly briefly entertaining minigames constructed entirely around a central gimmick, you are certainly welcome to give Nintendo your money. I won't stand in the way. I'm terribly sorry your panties were so horribly twisted by my perjorative referencing Wii Fit, Wii Play, and Wii Sports, which have ALL seen price drops in the southeastern United States, with the lone exception of Wii Sports, which is only sold bundled with the console... wonder where all those sales came from? I expect even greater drops in Wii Fit now that Wii Fit Plus has come out. We'll see what kind of legs this game has now that it, too, is competing against its own sequel.
Now to the issue of "fast sales", which you referred to as a problem. The comparison is not one between a tiny bit of money now and a large amount spread out over time. That's not an argument, but I can only assume you brought up the miniscule Killzone 2 to make this non-argument as if it made sense. A game that celebrates a month later when it reaches 1 million units is not a pimple on the hind end of a game that sells 4.7 million in the first 24 hours in the U.S. and U.K. alone. Modern Warfare 2 has broken every entertainment record there is for rapid revenue generation. They've got a huge head start, and Mario will need more than legs. He'll need a rocket scooter. The comparison between fast and prolonged sales is between a huge amount of money now or an equal or marginally greater amount spread out over time. I guarantee you that every executive of every company in the world would take the money now, given a comparable quantitiy, as opposed to later. If you don't believe me, you have a homework assignment. Look up "the time value of money". You can add "financial terminology" if the very first link displayed doesn't prove my point.
Actually, I feel sorry for everyone else on that cover art. For starters, they have picked the most randomly coloured yoshi's for each (mario has a green one when luigi is right there???). And secondly, that toad has one of those propeller hats, and unlike the gimmicky ones we have on earth, IT ACTUALLY WORKS!!!. So no, I do not feel sorry for the toad, I am actually jealous of the toad.messy said:I can't be the only one that feels sorry for the one toad on the cover art that doesn't get a yoshi can I?
You like opening every post with "nice try". Neat! You also really like numbered bulletpoints. How fun! I'll address each one individually.Georgeman said:Nice try again, but...
1) The argument over the DS having twice as many numbers isn't very valid. You know why? The moment that New Super Mario Bros. DS was released was the moment that the DS Lite started selling out like crazy. 2d Mario moves hardware. 3d Mario does not. That's why 2d Mario is a better seller than a 3d Mario. Same case with the older consoles.
And yes, you didn't call Mario Kart Wii garbage, but you told the lie of the non-existent bundle. And Super Paper Mario is NOT proper 2d Mario. That's like saying that Super Mario Galaxy is a proper Mario game. It's not. 3d Mario is a scavenger hunt at its finest. Something that many people don't prefer, while 2d Mario is a much more fast-paced game and thus more preferable for many people.
2) Harharhar indeed! If you think I was hurt, then you are probably forgetting about objective opinions. I don't own those games and don't plan to. But you know what? Try telling these things to all those 23 million who own Wii Fit or all those 25 million who own Wii Play or all those gazillion who own Wii Sports and genuinely enjoy it. I am pretty sure they would choose a "minigames collection" rather than a bloated, with cutscenes and gore, game. Your definition of a well-constructed game is your definition, nobody else's.
3) Grand Theft Auto IV sold a motherfucking 3.6 million on first day and also broke records! And look at it now. Where is it? Oh yes, horribly discounted. Keep in mind that Mario Kart Wii had sold just 2.3 million on its first week. And now? Now it's the best-selling Mario Kart. The value of money btw changes over time. It doesn't necessarily fall and I can guarantee you that investors prefer to invest on companies that generate a lot of money over time rather than investing on companies who makes games that last for 3 and less months.
Killzone 2 was just an example of how games are sold these days. Selling only for 3 months, and then, horribly discounted. While this tactic existed on previous generations, it was nowhere near that bad. And let's not forget that, according to reports anyway, Modern Warfare 2 was sold for half price on stores. So yes, there is an issue. The issue of getting pitiful amounts of cash out of something that cost millions to create.
I've read that sentence about eight times, and I still haven't been able to figure out what the heck you're trying to say. I give up. Your awkwardly phrased, unintelligible assertion has conquered me.And let's not forget that, according to reports anyway, Modern Warfare 2 was sold for half price on stores.
1. I said that 2d Mario sells better than 3d. You said that Super Mario 64 sells better than Super Mario Bros 3, but that's a lie. According to the most popular purchases on VC, Super Mario 64 is nowhere to be seen while Super Mario Bros is number 1, along with all the rest of the 2d Mario. Neat huh? As for the DS, let me repeat: The DS, on the date that New Super Mario Bros DS. was released, DIDN'T have 100+ millions of sold units. It didn't even have 30 million. But with software like New Super Mario Bros DS., Brain Training and Nintendogs it did reach all those 100 million. Nifty, huh?PhiMed said:You like opening every post with "nice try". Neat! 1. Allow me to paraphrase the two paragraphs you just wrote about 2D/3D and the number of DS and Wii units out there. "I arbitrarily dismiss your point because it destroys my argument. My broad sweeping statement is true in all cases. The numerous cases where it doesn't hold obviously are 'improper'. Now I'll make up wildly provably false and/or completely subjective statements which seem to patch the holes in my previous argument, but actually do nothing of the sort."
2. "Objective opinion"? New homework assignment. Please look up the word oxymoron. Also, stop mentioning the original Wii Sports as if it's sold a single copy on its own merit.
3. You didn't do your homework from last time. Seriously? It would take 5 seconds! You weren't even the least bit curious about what the real meaning of that term might be? You couldn't even try to learn one thing? I guess you were too busy convincing yourself that playing Brain Age will make you smarter so there's no need for actual knowledge.

Why am I talking to you?
I "started with the quotes" with a one-line response to your quote that was completely respectful. You responded with an insulting diatribe. You claim you haven't insulted me, yet your tone has been condescending and sarcastic from the very beginning.Georgeman said:1. I said that 2d Mario sells better than 3d. 2. Yes, objective opinion. What's so hard to figure out? I might not be so keen on Wii Fit and Wii Play, but that doesn't mean that my opinion is solid gold, right? 23 million owners of Wii Fit, 25 million owners of Wii Play, and about 8 million Wii Sports Resort owners (oh my correction) stand there to tell me: "Keep your Planescape Torments of me, you freaking nerd". See what I mean or are you still confused?
3. Har har har! "Oh look at me! So superior, outsmarting a Nintendo fanboy! LOLOL!" Thanks for insulting me twice, while I didn't. Clearly proves your superiority. I don't see where you are going with the time value of money. Do you mean to imply that somehow those companies have such a huge interest by selling all these games for just 3 months while the half-a-million per week Nintendo games is just a marginal increase? Hard to believe.
You ask why are you talking to me when you are the one who started the quotes? Oh dear...

I'm not going to bother responding to any of the rest of your post, because it's rambling, incoherent nonsense.
It's interesting? It's a remake of a remake, with nothing but plotless platforming (from what I gather), how is that more interesting or engaging than MW2?samaritan.squirrel said:Waait. Wait wait wait. What's this 'not Italy' business?
I kid. I sincerely hope it does outselff MW2. may restore my faith in gaming. I know the game is a step backwards and whatever, but at least it's interesting.
