New Syndicate? Good, bad or ugly?

I was very excited to hear the rumours of a new syndicate game, the first was a work of genius. But then I thought, look how hard sonic's corpse got shafted, would it be better to let a sleeping classic lie?

Even though Syndicate is a pretty well-respected classic, I would imagine so few people have played it that EA will probably feel like they can really upset the formula and get away with it. (i.e. Turn the game into an FPS) Then again, the developer could get really caught up in a wave of nostalgia (like what Fallout 3 experienced) and really attempt to translate the classic gameplay into a more modern setting.

You just know they will turn it into an FPS, so let it lie,
sad but true. The only way to include a fps element which wouldn't destroy the bloody point of the game would be dungeon keeper style posession but that seems a little too creative for EA

I enjoyed the original but found the controls clumsy (probably me being crap though)

A new up to date version in the same vein would be nice!

Man how many people here have even played the original? That said it won't be the same, Syndicate was VERY turn based, a new one will probably just be like any other shooter.

Seem to remember being dissapointed by Wars, totally loved the original though. As others have said I can see it going into an FPS, having said that it would probably make a really good FPS if done well.

On a plus note EA may not be a bad place for it to be if they can pull it off.

Syndicate Wars was actually one of my first and favourite games waaay back when I got my first PC. I had Syndicate for a while, but I could never get it to run, then the disk got lost in a move.

I actually think the game could be served quite well with a Ghost Recon style of gameplay. But it would be nice for them to do something new and unique.

Syndicate was great, who's to say they won't do it as a third person, tactical group type game? That's something I'm sure a lot of people would like, it would be a break from the FPS norm and EA's all about the money. Perhaps not going the obvious FPS route would be an attention grabber...

Does anybody else remember when EA were famous for making the best games anybody could come out with? Sensible Soccer, Jungle Strike, etc... I could name five or six for the Megadrive (my choice of console during my teenage years) alone.

It intrigues me that, during the time when I've basically taken a several-year-long sabbatical from gaming, only to come back to it on a casual basis now, they seem to have gone from being a company that was world-renowned for quality and innovation, to something that's almost universally derided on gaming forums.

How'd that one happen?

Oh, and I was a big fan of the original "Syndicate", with one enormous caveat, but it kept breaking my Windows 95 computer. The only bit I thought didn't work was the "persuadotron" - I HATED that, especially in the early levels where you had lots of civillians to persuade. It meant that you didn't have to fight anything, as long as you had enough people persuaded you could convert your enemies to mindless zombies who followed you everywhere and you could sell off for money after each mission, just by being close to them. IMO it was a game-breaker.

I quite liked being able to blow everything up on wars, razing a whole city is so satisfying when you're 10 *sigh*
