Gamecube: Skies Of Arcadia Legends
Xbox 360: Lost Odyssey

My two favorite RPG's

Also:

Mass effect 1/2 - PC/360
Dragon age - PC/360 (You would want the pc one).

JRPG's, racing games and adventure style games are much better than starting with a FPS game, as they take a while to get used to, try others before say, halo or cod

EDIT: Fable 2 is fun aswell!

I don't know if it'll fit your preferences, but I'll recommend 'The elder scrolls: Oblivion' nevertheless.

For first getting used to the sort of things common to a lot of games, there are fewer options (I have to admit many games we'd consider "normal" take a lot of assumed skills, like movement and camera control)

On the cheap, you could start out with some indie games on Xbox Live Arcade.

Also, to find out what sort of thing you'd like, try playing demos of games that look interesting.
Finally: If you're going to play/buy PC games, a good try is Steam (www.steampowered.com)
To summarize, it's a constantly-running (but relatively low-resources) program that lets you buy and download games, with a library probably close to 1,000 games by now. It also lets you play demos, watch trailers, and even has lots of community features. It's like the PC's version of Xbox Live.

Get Rez HD and Pac-Man Championship edition from the xbox arcade. Both have gameplay that isn't too hard to get into or complicated but they are excellent. If you want a xbox game with a good story that has a good mix of gameplay then try Brutal Legend. It's not going to be too expensive and might widen your tastes. For PC, download steam and get The Orange Box.

Then he should buy a gamecube, or buy the game, then emulate it? (I think that's legal)

For PC, buy The Orange Box. HL2 and it's Episodes are good story-based games, TF2 is a fun online FPS, and Portal is a great Puzzle-type game.

Any clues as to what you might like to try? I would recommend anything with the word BioWare. All good stuff.

Batman: Arkham Asylum if you want some simpler combatty adventure. Prince of Persia could be good too.

It's kind of a good time since I don't have a current gen console but a lot of the stuff on consoles has PC ports which aren't all universally evil.

Fallout 3 if you have some patience.
the Halo universe if you like Sci-Fi, but can't get into RPGs.
Mass Effect if you like Sci-Fi and DO get into RPGs.
Get the Orange Box for PC if you can run it, but Xbox is still fine.

It depends, have you ever played any games before? Can you control the camera and move at the same time. Its a skill most of us take for granted, its actually quite difficult to learn with no past experience.

Eh, the only Gamecube emulator that I know is buggy as hell. Then again, I've only tried one (don't even remember it's name sadly).

The Darkness and Bioshock are pretty story driven so you might like them.

Dead Space is a pretty fun horror game too.
