Ok ok ok I know I know another Skyrim thread. I just wanted to state that I'm blown away by this game. I've played Morrowind GotY and Oblivion and could not get into EITHER ONE. So I was cautious about delving into Skyrim. I am barely into the game however since I just bought it last night, but I am hooked. I don't know what it is. But I was just wondering what in Skyrim I should find and absolutely NOT MISS. Things that I should search out. Or any playthrough advice. Thanks!

I recommend just playing it without anyone holding your hand.
If you know what to expect from a guide or some jackoff spoiler online, you'll kind of ruin the experience for yourself.

The Dark Brotherhood. It was the best story you could have gotten in Oblivion, and it looks to be the same in Skyrim. Go to Windhelm, and search around untill you overhear a female Dark elf and a little child talking about another child that's trying to summon the Dark Brotherhood. Or just find Aventus Arentino's house and break in and talk to him, after you complete his quest, find a place to sleep (not in an inn), and you should wake up in a different place. Then, let your Skyrim Dark Brotherhood experience commence.

The game makes sure to guide you towards places you haven't been to before. Other than the dragon that saves your bacon in the beginning you won't get to see any more until you get your first shout. Also, stay away from giants until you're high level (20+). Their infamous instant kill attack has a higher chance of succeeding the lower level you are.

Wut? I always slept in the Solitude Inn (Winking Skeever) and I'd get the quest. I would then murder Astrid in cold blood, then go slaughter the rest of the Dark Brotherhood. Such is life.

OT: Hmmmm...the Companion questline is pretty cool. Start it in the upside down boat building in Whiterun.

Edit: The Mage College quest is really awesome, too. Start it in Winterhold College. You don't even have to be a Mage to do it.

Just make sure you're prepared before you go into the Labyrinthian. One of the hardest dungeons in the game, and I don't think you can get out once you're in.

When I tried guiding my friend to start the DB, he tried to sleep in an inn in Windhelm, and the quest wouldn't start, he had to go sleep in a random bed somewhere for it to start for him. And yeah, it isn't Whiterun, it's Edoras, from the Lord of the Rings movies. Seriously, it looks almost exactly the same.
