Maybe, but there's a difference between expanding upon the original story and rewriting it entirely because your lead actor's jaw is too large to say certain words. Not that I really mind; there's a long and proud tradition of filmmakers ignoring the original source material when it comes to adapting the works of Philip K. Dick.

Largely because the works of Philip K. Dick read like the crazed ramblings of a doped-up maniac, which they are, but he's still a doped-up maniac who deserves literary respect.

If you do want to familiarize yourself with some of his work, I'd advise you not to just pick one of his books at random off of the shelf. Dick did serious amounts of LSD, and it shows. He was a brilliant writer, but trying to decipher some of his stuff is like trying to untangle a ball of yarn while the cat remains firmly convinced that said ball is still in its possession.

I'd recommend "The Man in the High Castle", which is a fairly coherent alternate history story that restricts the majority of the weird stuff to the end of the book. There's also "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, which is a nice example of the less comprehensible things he wrote that still manages to have a coherent plotline and recognizable protagonist and antagonist.

not really a remake, just a movie with the same sort of premise. In otherwords, anyone who's seen total recall already know the twisty ending it will no doubt have.

Cliched? How so - because there have been a few movies set there by now? We're still a long way off going there.

Well... I kind of liked the goofiness of the Arnie version. I hope they approach the sci-fi with a similar sense of humour in this film.

But really, this is a cheap cash in on the "what is real?" premise recently popularized by Inception, with a familiar name attached for nerds to get excited over and generate free hype.

Not that I think there's anything wrong with that, I just wanted to be the first to say it in this thread.

A shame about Mars, but they weren't really that accurate about the planet in the first film anyway. And I guess having Earth's clean air supply be the issue is more current.

I don't remember if the character actually went to Mars in the original story or not. Okay I just read it again, he did go to Mars but not during the events of the story, so it'll be interesting how the movie plays out. There's not a lot of action in the story at all, but I won't complain if stuff gets blown up. Sometimes that works.

Seems like they're going to be more faithful to the original book then, where he never actually visits Mars. I really hope they include the ending because that could be hilarious.

Not too sure on how Colin Firth is going to pull this off though. He doesn't seem the right actor for this.

Heh, Colin Firth would actually be a way more interesting choice for the lead in this film...

I'd like to also recommend "Dr Futurity", as one of the few time travel stories that actually makes perfect sense. One short story I always liked was "Vulcan's Hammer" which had an interesting premise about a world which relied on a sentient supercomputer for governance but because it had so much power, some of the humans overseeing it tried to restrict its input about world events so that it wouldn't overreact with extreme prejudice. Pulpy, sure but I like that kind of sci-fi!

If your only exposure to Philip K. Dick is from films based on his work, there used to be a good compilation which contained the majority of stories that had been turned into films. I think it was simply called "Minority Report" since it came out at the same time as the Spielberg flick. You might be surprised how different (and short!) the short story is ("We Can Remember It For You Wholesale") compared to Total Recall!

As a die hard 90s Total Recall fan this looks horribly meh to me. Not gritty enough, PG-13 and Colin is not even close to an Arnie. While Arnie was by no means a great actor, he had some of the best screen presence ever. Also no three boobs, that is a -20...also no Johnny Cab most likely... Hell I liked the future earth in the orig more even though he was barely there.
