My wife organizes a variety of community development events for a University. People in similar positions across the country have been talking about setting up a gaming competition. Winners head to state comps and so on. They already have similar things for sport and music.

One University had a comp with League of Legends as a trail run but there was (as usual) anger towards newbies. But the Unis want as many people who are interested to be involved.

Do you think this is a good idea?

What should they play?

Should there be an elite level?

Any other things we should think about?

'course it's a good idea!

They should play casual games if the unis want as many people as possible, so Mario Kart and Smash. There's also Pokemon but everyone would need to know all the restrictions or "house rules" that can be made (let me know if you want to know what kind of things there are).

Having an "elite level" to separate experienced players from newbs will be hard to do because there's really no way to know between them unless they're well known, or they've destroyed everyone at a previous time (which of course you can't tell if this is a new thing). Either way, since it is a community event meant for fun I'm against having any sort of separation.

Based on your comments about "state comps" I'm assuming you're American?

In which case if you're looking to get into the University level Esports scene you should probably know that there's already a major organisation for fairly high-level esports, the Collegiate Starleague, which covers DOTA2, LoL, Hearthstone, SC2 and CSGO.

So if you were looking to start up something you might want to talk to those guys and coordinate.

No Australian. We do have comps for state level for everyone (not just unis) but I actually don't know if there are lower level comps.

I saying more elite level so some people can take it seriously while others are just having fun.
