It's kind of a weak mode in my opinion. Unless my game is broken, you need to eat once per day (if that), drink about twice per day, and sleep about one hour per 2-3 days. There's so much water and food lying around that you never really have to worry about it. Something special is supposed to happen at the end of the game though (which I haven't gotten to), so we'll see if it was worth it.
You get an achievement.

A fucking achievement.

Totally not worth it, dude.

No, it's fucking monotonous towards the end of the game and it really does not add any challenge whatsoever. My first playthrough was hardcore and it really is not as immersive as you think having to search for water, food, a doctor's bag and a couple stimpaks just to see you through, it's more god damn flow breaking than anything else and really added nothing to the game for me aside from making really long journeys even longer by forcing me to stop in and clear out buildings with precious little ammo to find a filthy toilet to drink from.
Exactly. Agree completely. As I said, anything that gives New Vegas even more excruciating loading screens to watch is not fun in my book.

Whether hardcore mode is a good or bad addition to fallout depends on the individual player. All of my friends think that its just an added level of frustration. However I find it a different kind of challenge that I actually enjoy. If you dont deal well with logistical thinking and strategy then hardcore mode probably isnt for you but if you dont mind it hardcore mode might be something to try.

Personally I wish I could tweak how often you have to eat/drink/sleep to require those needs to come up much more often then they acctually do. As is the extra difficulty of hardcore mode is very small but even so I still enjoy it.

i found that on hardcore normal it wasnt hardcore enough. i was expecting that you know you would have to eat and drink each day. like especially drink since your in a desert.

It's funny how everyone forgets that Stimpacks don't heal limbs in hardcore, and they heal over time...

That makes the game really difficult... the food and drink are just for immersion.

I actualy found it affected very little, I turned it on in a hope it would add more to the survival element, making me think more about my actions and so on.
I was enjoying it at first, I quite liked running out of docters bags and running to the docters to get my limbs uncrippled, antil I realised I could just sleep...
killed the immersion factor completly and removed the only real challenge hardcore mode created...

NO>

Not at all.

Here's why:

Loading screens.

New Vegas on hardcore is only mildly more challenging, but a hundred times more tedious. You constantly have to return to towns/storage areas to get food/water/Doctor's bags and it is excruciating.

I spend enough time in NV watching long ass loading screens on Normal mode, Hardcore was like fucking torture.
I've noticed you keep posting about loading screens? Is that a common complaint? What system are you playing on? In my experience it takes a couple of seconds when you go between one area and the next. A bit annoying yes, but hardly excruciating.

I don't think introducing daily life routines into a game world you generally immerse yourself in to get away from daily life routines is all that appealing to most players, but if you go for realism and it helps your immersion into the game world, then of course it would be worthwhile. To me it would be a bother cutting down on the fun though.

No, just no. I played through a fair bit, thinking it was ok, then towards the end it was just ridiculous, but my pride wouldn't let me quit.

Hmm, I liked it. I don't get why people are bitching about it being tedious and monotonous though. I mean what did they THINK it was going to be? Making your game character have to eat and drink was NOT going to be tedious and monotonous? OK... That is kinda like being asked if you want to play a puzzle game and then bitching "Hey, this is a puzzle game!" The game is asking if you want it to be more tedious.
It isn't even that demanding of a system. You eat once day, drink twice a day and sleep every other night. That isn't as bad as it could have been. I prefer it over the game being ridiculously easy like FO3.

Depends on what you are personally looking for from it. It appears some people were expecting it to be LESS tedious than having to eat/drink once per day and sleep every other night. Perhaps they were expecting to eat/drink once per week and sleep every other week.
It sounds like it can take roleplaying to the absolute max, but it also sounds like it could be a whole lot more trouble than it's worth.
It can take RP to a new level and THAT is what you have to decide if it is worth it or not. It is its own reward. Take for instance when I had to hobble my way back to the doctor in Goodsprings with my entire left side of my body crippled along with my head. I was sleep deprived and thirsty as well. I could have fast traveled but I was RPing. That trek back was scary as I had to fight off 2 packs of coyotes on the way. I succeeded and it felt rewarding.

If you are like me and Fallout 3 was boringly easy, I think this is a good way to increase the difficulty as well as add something to the gameplay. I am still working my way through the game but am playing on Hard - Hardcore and have yet to really have much trouble other than the one trek back to the doctor from Grimm.

I disliked that you only have to sleep once every 2 days and eat once per day. Although, that really depends on what food you eat. (Not that it's hard to come by good food that takes your hunger down. If you drink from a sink you only need to drink once per day. My main gripe I guess is that you don't really have to monitor it much.

I did absolutely love the doctor's bag on crippled limbs though.

My wife did hardcore mode on the high difficulty and she will say it's just not for everyone. If you are up for some frustrating times but some real challenging game play she says yes it's damn worth it but it's seriously for the most hardcore of players

I'm on 360.

How long have you been playing the game? It was when I got to Freeside/Vegas area that they started to get really long for me. We're talking a minute and a half for some of them.

It's a commonly had problem too, I'm surprised you haven't heard about it.

Okay, so it is more fun, challenging, realistic, and you get an achievement at the end.

Yep, worth it.

I'd say it is. The food, drink and sleep isn't too much to worry about, but it makes combat much more challenging, especially if you're specced in melee.

Really? My loading screens take ten seconds, absolute maximum. I rarely get time to read the loading text.

On topic, I like Hardcore mode. It's not sufficiently hardcore for me, but it's pretty fun. Especially the healing over time aspect and the doctor bags. I think the problem I end up having though is that I fast travel everywhere in the later game which means I'm basically constantly drinking due to time lapses. It's not a big problem though, there's definitely enough water to be found, since stocks replenish over time, and even if you eat/drink radiated stuff getting your rads taken away isn't tough either. I think it's worthwhile, overall.

its so bloody ironic, hardcore mode is actually EASIER than normal mode. because stimpacks and super stims heal over time, you jut pump yourself full off them and watch as your health grows back as soon as you lose it. i fought against lanius and his dogs and legion guards doing this, and i just sat ther while they pounded the fuck out of me, while i just mowed them down with the minigun. every time i got hit, my health just grew back, and the shitloads of hydra made my limbs heal too. i dont think bethesda thought that through very well.

As far as I'm concerned, Hardcore is the only way to play New Vegas.

Always felt weird to play through Fallout 3 and only live off of stimpacks. Food? Who needs food! Or water for that matter! I have stims!
