New video card or PS2 first (recommendation)?

I've got a feeling that i might get semi-flamed for this, not because it's offensive, but just because i'm expecting people to say 'get both'. However i'm a real cheap arse, and whilst i probably will get both eventually, for the time being i only really wanna get either or. So basically, i've never had a PS2, because i bought a gamecube for the sixth generation consoles :(. There's all these games i missed out on like Shin Megami Tensei series, Final Fantasy X, Okami, Sly 2 etc. There's just alot of RPG's and exclusive games i want to play.
Or i could get a new video card for my PC (something pretty good so i can play most new games). I currently have an ATI Radeon HD 2400, and just to give an example, i can't play The Witcher on the very lowest settings without lag :(, not good.
So like i said, i'll probably get both within time, but for now which one do you think i should get first?

The card, if you ask me.

There are just too many pc games you have to try first.

PC card I'd say, you'll be able to play older and modern games.
Thanks also. Yeah i guess PS2 does kind of limit me just to older games. I think i'm leaning toward the video card now.

Go for the PS2.

If the card you're going for is an ATi 2XXX series card, you're better off using an onboard to be honest. The 2XXX series is fucking awful. Poor drivers, can't run shit, nothing but problems.
An X1950 would be better than one of the 2000 series cards.

Check out as many reviews as you can find on those cards... they're horribly bad.

Edit: Oh fuck I see that's your current card XD

Disregard my previous comment, I suck cock! XD

TBH I would go for the new video card. There's so many great PC games to try out... especially when you include mods and such. Heck one of the games I look forward to so so so much is Black MESA Source.

Well, do you want to spend $50 or $1500?

Nah it's cool, thanks for the advice. I'm looking at maybe a ATI HD 4850 or 4770, which i think are pretty sweet :). I am really, really looking forward to Black MESA source, though dare i say it might still be a while until it's released though.

Sorry, this might make me sound like a complete idiot, but which one are you saying is $50 and which is $1500? The graphics card would cost me about $200 or so, and if i got a PS2 slim from stores (pre-owned maybe just to being even more cheap arse) plus accessories and what not might be about the same price or a bit less, just very roughly.

My 2900XT wants a word with you. I run a 24" moniter and I'm yet to find a game, including crysis, that I can't run at 1900x1200 pixels with medium-high graphics, in fact I have several friends using comparable nvidia cards (8800GT or 8800GTX) who get notably lower performance on smaller screens (on of said friends basicially has everything better, where my mobo is a 965-P6Q6, he has a striker 2, where I have a e6400 he has the top end quad available at the time (can't remember what it was called), the only advantage I can see me having over him is graphics card). I'll grant anything below a 2900XT was a terrible but, but anything nvidia from the g80 chipset lower than a 8800GTS isn't worth it's weight in sand, they were/are equally terrible.

I'd definately recommend the graphics card, not us up with the modern ones, but the general trend has been get something built off the top end chipset, because midrange cards have become a bit of a joke (ie get a 4850 over a 48670).

I'd go for the PS2. It's very well rounded and has lots of games for whatever genre you like.
If you have the necessary cash then go for graphics, I wouldn't because the current degredation of hardware always makes me feel doggy when upgrading.

You won't have lag or performance problems with your PS2, that much is certain.

Thanks for the answer. PS2 does have some almightly games that i'm really keen to play. And a PS2 wouldn't need to be upgraded. But on the flip side far more newer games would be released on PC. Hmmm...

If you want to get a video card that is going to be able to run anything, it's going to be more than a chunk more than a PS2.

I'm saying that a graphics card (or a set thereof) costs between $50 and $1500.

Okay, first check the list of all time classic games. Notice which option will get you the most of them. Then throw the list away and get a Ps2. Seriously, you need to have played Shadow of the Colossus, God of War, Okami, Kingdom Hearts, Metal Gear Solid 3, and I could go on.
All those games you mentioned, i really have to play. Especially Shadow of Colossus (which is pretty hard to find now though) and Okami.

Ah, my bad. Yeah the graphics card would cost a good couple hundred more.

The graphics card first. If you can save up the amount for the card, then the PS2 shouldn't be a problem.

Get the big spender out of the way, it makes saving for the console seem like a piece of cake.

Since I'm a godforsaken PC-fanboy i would have to say the videocard. I got an ATI 3870 512 mb for about 100 ? and it runs excellent. Though a PS2 isn't bad either. Aprox 90 ? for a new, at least in my country. Gamingside I can't say much, both PS2 and PC has really good games.

Thanks for the replies everyone, afraid to say i'm still about as unsure as i was initially. I might just have to let it settle on my subconscious for a while.
