New Words

This has happened to me a few times recently, and in the past. Have any of you ever heard of a new word or expression, and then it's come up within like the following week, having never heard it before in your life.

For example, when I was younger I heard someone use the term 'equilibrium' for the first time. A few days later the film 'equilibrium' came out.

Has this happened to anyone else, or am I just weird?

Yeah that happens to me all the time. But I have come to the conclusion that its because until someone says it to you directly your brain kinda just dismisses the word.

not really, tho i have a large vocabulary so new things don't always come up.

tho i've started saying a few things and noticed a few ppl saying them later on. however i have noticed sometimes when you do hear things they will come up a lot later or at least you happen to notice them more often

this just doesn't happen with words tho, once something is brought to your attention for the first little bit you happen to notice it more, i think cause you are subconsciously thinking about it so you pick it up easier

Are you talking about neologisms (brand news words like Cromulent that The Simpson's scriptwriters just made up on the spot) or are you talking about words you have ever heard of before?

I can't think of something specifically happening like that to me but the brain works in complex ways as it handles things like vocabulary. In all likelihood you probably heard the word Equilibrium many times before but your brain discarded it as useless information after a week or so except this time there was a relevant use of the word, as a film title and you mind can only remember that one time it was mentioned though considering you read, hear and speak over 10,000 words per day it is very likely you will take in new words but discard them if useless such as without a proper definition.

The weirdest feeling is that I mix up my dreams with computer games and even dream about First person shooters though they are usually pretty confusing and disjointed, not anything really interesting but I sometimes recollect looking out of a dark room into a corridor with flooded with blinding white sunlight from glass walls to the outside and I have that disembodied feeling you get with FPS games, then a vase with a giant purple flower in it comes flying at me and I can't remember anything else. Maybe I should lay off the French cheese before I go to sleep.

I was watching this show called The Fairly Oddparents earlier today (yeah, it's a kid's cartoon, shutupdon'tjudgeme) and one of the characters made up the word "Doom-ungous" to describe just how bad the situation was. I guess we'll have to see if it crops up anywhere else...

Nah, usually not, since I find the definitions for the new words that I can. This is especially useful since most of the new words I encounter I can just look up on the net since I am in close proximity to the computer most of the time.

I like to make up words. Me and my mate made up Begardened.. Im not sure what it means

Smoky smell

"terrible"
How you smell.
Ha, sorry bout that last one.

And this sort of thing is called "hightened awareness, like when you see and old car for the first time, then you start noticing that same car alot.

when i found out what the word pedophile means (pretty sure it was the first time i heard it, too) later that day the episode of csi had a pedophile in it

I heard the phrase. "I won't be ignored" on some random movie or show and then I heard it next week on Tripping the Rift AND Family Guy

Also, your recurring happenstance of new word-new application is a common thing, it seems to me.
