I'm going to buy a 360 pretty soon, and I was talking about it with 2 friends. One of them mentioned that apparently the new wave of 360s manufactured aren't backwards compatible at all. Is this true? I tried looking it up but the internet gives jack shit results for stuff like this.

So if anyone was bought a 360 recently or knows someonw who did, do you know if they can still play original Xbox games?

I don't think thats true, but only a select few games are backwards compatable, they could have been trying to play one that isn't.

Whatever, just wash your hands.
the xbox has always been weird about it, it can play some games backwards but not others, lets see if the list is still up, yeah it is, here is the list of games that will work

The 360's have never been sold with backwards compatible hardware already installed. You have to install the feature on any console, old or new, but there's no reason I can think of why you wouldn't be able to install the backwards compatible hardware on a new console. It'd be silly for them to remove that ability.

I don't think so, but I think it is limited to the Plantinum hits

Also, You can buy Old games off the market place.

Platinum Hit/ not doesn't matter whatsoever, the direct correlation is whether the engine is easy to set up emulator code for. Any 360 with a hard drive will run any backwards compatible title, but whether titles are backwards compatible is based on whether it was possible/worth the bother. The Madden series, for example, are not functional with 360 if released for original x-box, but on the other hand you have games like Barbie Horse Adventures which were among the first wave of titles that worked because they were using an engine something important was built with or were retardedly easy to fix.

Anyway, since it's an emulation, it's all based in software and thus requires a download; I'm pretty sure they're done adding titles' functions to the software by this point.
EDIT: What the OP's friends were probably thinking of was the move away from backwards compatibility that DID occur with the PS3.

That's funny since I haven't installed anything on my xbox (since it isn't connected to the 'net) and some of my games are backwards compatible and some aren't.

Xbox's are weird about their BC stuff. You're probably best trying to find what chipset you have and finding out if the wave release is BC or not.

As long as the game wasn't released on both the Xbox and the 360 your fine.

I picked up my copy of Battlefield 2 for the Xbox from my parents house so I could play it again, turns out that because they released a 360 version you can't play the old version!

Had to go out and buy the 360 version. Not pleased.

Software, software! If you're installing hardware on your 360 (other than, say, the wifi adapter or the HDD), the next console update is gonna brick your system...

EDIT: But yeah, I play Crimson Skies, Kotor, Sneak King, and Psychonauts with no trouble... Then again, my Xbox is of the late first generation, and I'm frankly amazed (fingers crossed) that it hasn't RRODed yet.

It's software emulation, each 360 that ever came out can do it as well as every 360 that will ever come out.
Unfortunately they stopped adding to the list of games over 2 years ago, leaving fans of the old system with a pile of games they can't play. >_<
