A very good friend of mine is planning to visit the Big 'Possum-ridden Apple this summer, with the purpose of meeting a lady-friend. It has transpired, however, that said lady cannot rent an apartment as planned, but must instead stay in her shared college dorm. This obviously means that my friend has to rent his own place for the duration of two months, but with a budget in the region of 3500 Euro, this is proving to be a difficult prospect.
So, a question to the residents of that hallowed metropolis: What's the cheapest vacation apartment one can expect to find, ideally in the Manhattan region? Advice would be highly appreciated. His tickets are purchased and everything, but this situation is sort of unexpected and very annoying.

For a whole summer? There is no way he is gonna be able to stay in Manhatten that long especially if he also plans on eating on that same budget.

I'd try for some place outside of manhatten that has quick access to a subway. I'd get the friend to ask his lady friend about which part of town is the cheapest to live and then google cheap apartments in those areas(most likely some econo lodge) or look through the classifieds on a site like craigslist for cheap apartments or people renting out rooms.

If he does find a place on craigslist or decides to find an apartment in the cheap part of town I think its also a requirement that he not stay out later than 10 or be a big burly man. NY's improved but not to the point where someone who hasn't lived there most of their life should throw caution to the wind.

Maybe this will help it does price by month I believe so put in like a 1000 or 800 if he plans on staying there 3 months.

Look outside of Manhattan and you may, may, be able to find a Sublet for a couple of months for less than $600 USD.

I'd look into if there any hostels around, you could always look into whether the YMCA has room.

7,000 - I hope that doesn't include airfare - should be enough for 2 months.
