Currently FPS, what game genre do you think will be "hot" in the years (decades) to come? My money would be on RPGs due to integration of certain elements already in games.

I'm betting that the astronomical success of Minecraft leads to an influx of games that allow a lot of creativity and environment building

Well most Sex Simulations are meant to be "hot". Hentai, Japan's #1 export.

While I think it's arguably current or slightly passed instead of the "Next" thing but: DOTA clones.

I remember reading about Demigod and going OMG THIS IS SO COOL WHY HASN'T THERE BEEN A GAME LIKE THIS YET?!!!

Since being the dedicated Entire-Blizzard-library hater I am, I was blissfully ignorant that it was a take of a popular mod. (Too bad Demigod kind of sucked. BUT! It did teach me that I hate the genre as a whole!)

Now there's been a few copies, but we still have DOTA2 (Picked up by valve strangly enough), and that other project being made by some of the first few dudes to make the mods, and it seems like League of Legends and Heroes of Newearth are still doing well.

RPGs, as more and more they affect and devour games of other genres. Many games can now be called RPGs, though some would argue they are not (see few posts above) most games now have atleast some RPG influence. Personally, I am in favor of this for the most part when done right.

FPS games have been hot since Doom. If you're talking about "current", I think we've just seen the rhythm genre Konami created come to an end as a hot game type. More current is the Zombie Genre. Anything with zombies sells, so we'd be looking at what comes next.

I think a more interesting question is to ask which genre will get consumed. The point and click adventure genre almost died out once devs realised they could include everything that made them good in other genres. The FFVII/X style linnear RPG I think is also dying now that people realise cut scenes can be introduced into every genre. I also get the feeling that RPGs will end up fading away in a sense as many games are including RPG elements (mainly character customisation and advancement). So you may be right that RPGs become the next hot thing, but that could be more because RPG elements are being introduced into everything.

For now? MMORPG's.

A few years from now? MMO-something elses.
Would an MMORTS be possible?
Evony sort of claims to fill that genre, I disagree since it's all about waiting and has the action of Civ 1 at best. I don't see why one couldn't take the ongoing war model in Mag or Chrome Hounds expand on it a bit and make it RTS.

Creativity? HAH. Clearly you overestimate the human race.

Etcetera, etcetera, excreta.

I'll say zombie survival-castle building-resource managment-open world-sandbox-games, or you know, Minecraft.

I think he is talking more along the lines of Borderlands.
In fairness, Borderlands is basically Diablo with guns.

[sub]EDIT: And a first-person perspective. And cars.[/sub]

I see. I agree with you on the Minecraft thing as well.
