Rome total war 2 would be nice, the game would benefit from all the new stuff, and a bit more balance would be good.
i doubt that a more modern setting would realy work with the way total war games function, and you would probly end up with a company of heros like game.

they could also do a greek total war focusing on their golden age if they dont want to do a rome one i guess

Not really. There was some mobile warfare in the opening and in the closing battles, but not much. It was basicly a massive soldiergrinder.

-Large armies, thank democracy, Napoleon and the draft.
-Bad communication. No radio's and crappy telephones.
-Outdated military tactics. Stupid arrogant Generals. Apathic politicians.
-Machineguns.
-Accurate rifles.
-Barbed wire.
-Army intelligence was nearly non existant.
-Army logistics wasn't very motorized. Most depended on rail. Wich isn't very flexible.

This combination led to a deadly cocktail. In the end the Germans came up with stuff like elastic defense and sturmtruppen and the French used the first light tanks.

I think the problem with these WW1 and such idea's is people are only really thinking of the campaign map and how that works. Campaign side of it would be fine, setting up trenches and forts it would be easy peesy.

What your forgetting is the battle aspect.

In WW1 the transition went from battle formations meeting up and fighting eachother into defensive warfare. You have 'units' but they are not tight blocks of men like Empire and Rome, they are spread out. Warfare changed so drastically that I dont like Total War would be able to pull it off just right. It would be cool to have a absolute victory but the way warfare worked just to put it simply, wouldnt.

A interesting period would be the Dark Ages, a European map of shortly after the Roman Collapse and nations in any sense of the word not really existing. Instead of a Rome 2 or Medieval 3 that would be a good bridge. Play through Justinians attempts at reconquest of the west and the rise of the Arabs as they sweep through the middle east, which thus would show the start of the Mueslim nations.

I think with the ability to slightly customize some factions (Barbaric) the possibilities are endless.

It'll almost certainly be Rome 2 or Medieval 3, with my money being on the former first. Their engine and game play style is far more suited to ancient combat than modern.

What I'd really LIKE to see, though, is a Total War game set in the Song of Ice and Fire universe.

I don't want to see TW go modern, or in fact anything later than they've already gone. I'd like to see a Rome 2 and perhaps a China. Apart from that, I'll trust the developers to make sound decisions, I'll probably buy the games either way.

They kind of dabbled with it, but yes I'd like to see a full game based around the colonization concept. Africa would make an interesting one too, with the likes of the Caliphates, Bedouins, and Benin Empire squaring off against Ottomans, The French, British and Prussians.

The problem with that setting is that the units become too standardized. Towards the end of Empire total war, the reliance is largely on generic line infantry, light infantry and artillery. That would be magnified all the more in the Post industrial age, and create a fairly bland, limited roster of units. The naval portion of the game on the other hand; that would be interesting if awkward to set up (ships were shooting each other from over six to twelve miles away; that wouldn't look too exciting with the limitations of Total War's RTS maps.

That'd be a travesty, a WW1 game without trench warfare.

Frankly, I don't see it working in Total War. They ought to try it in a more classic RTS formula first, I really like the CoH engine. But that's offtopic.

Total War: Crimea would be fine for me.

If not Rome 2 I don't think they would go past World War 1. Because WW1 seems like a sweet spot between big battles of the early days but not to much technology or air fighting as WW2.

No, Empire starts in 1705, around the beginning of the Seven Years War.
The Elizabethan Era ran from 1558 to 1603. Renaissance times.
