What's morbid about it. Safety equipment has reached a crazy level and injuries from even the most devastating accidents are very rare, death even rarer. These drivers are aware of the risks of the sport, much like any job with elements of danger. You hope nobody gets hurt but people also wanna see shit blow up.

Yeah, that’s morbid curiosity in a nutshell. But it’s a normal aspect of human psychology.
