I recently started watching Nichijou and I'm really enjoying it! It seems to hit my sense of humour on the mark. I haven't read the manga, but I was interested in enthusing (or likewise, conversing) about the show with you fine folks. I'm currently exactly half way through (episode 13).

For those not in the know, it's a slice-of-life comedy anime with huggable cute characters and a somewhat offbeat and surrealist sense of humour. Kyoto Animation, who put out a lot of quality shows (in my opinion) is responsible for the production of the anime.

Anyway, some points of discussion: who is your favourite character? What do you think of the show? How do you think it compares to other comedies or other slice of life shows? Do you think Kyoto Animation did a good job? How do you think it stacks up to their other works? Does the humour work for you?

Here's one for Mai...

All of her antics are inevitably worthy of at least an expression of o_O' or outright hilarious, especially when coupled with her deadpan features and the reaction of the other characters.

Though Minoru Shiraishi as Sakamoto with Hiromi Konno as Hakase are great as a boke/tsukkomi (after a fashion) which is faintly reminicent of Lucky Channel, for obvious reasons.

I'll say this, Nichijou is the first anime in years to genuinely entertain me (not counting Ghibli). Eventhough it has a simplistic style there's a great look to it, and the animation feels very vibrant.

I've only watched a few episodes though; Most of what I've seen is from clips on Youtube.

The humor feels like a mixture between the dry wit of Azumanga Daioh and the random batshit craziness of Excel Saga, and I fucking love it.

I guess the characters I like most are the professor and Sakamoto, or should I say, I like them as a comedy duo:

When you're done with that, you should try Danshi Koukosei no Nichijou (The Daily Lives of Highschool Boys).

It's very much the same vein of humor. Some would even call it Nichijou FOR MEN.

Yeah, it's much in the same vein, absolutely no continuum at all, and is just as wacky, though with no Hakase/Sakamoto analogous, but it isn't any worse for it.
