Nickelodeon Buys Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles For $60m

Children's entertainment network Nickelodeon has acquired the rights to the four "Heroes in a Half-Shell" with the intent on developing a new CGI animated TV series by 2012 along with a new feature film.

Cowabunga! The Ninja Turtles might not be as popular today as they once were during the late '80s and early '90s, but they're still worth a good chunk of change: $60 million, to be precise. That's the amount of money it cost for reports GI.biz [http://www.nick.com/].

Nickelodeon, which is a division of Viacom, plans on creating a new TMNT CGI animated series by 2012 (heralding the end times!) as well as a new feature film in conjunction with another Viacom division, Paramount Pictures. While the company has stated that it intends to work with long-time TMNT toymaker Playmates for all the physical merchandising, there has been no announcement about how the purchase will affect Ubisoft's rights to make videogames based on the franchise.

I'm not going to lie; it's hard to see how the Turtles are particularly relevant these days, let alone worth a cool $60 million. The franchise seems tired and a bit worn-out, but maybe that's just me getting older. Still, I'm not particularly sure how much of a place four pizza-loving mutant reptiles have in today's market beyond nostalgia for children of the 80s.

Oh well. I suppose there is that value to nostalgia if nothing else. And hey, if they can revitalize Mickey Mouse [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/95517-Epic-Mickey-Mouse-Goes-Retro-in-More-Ways-Than-One], then why not the Turtles?

For the record, Donatello was always the coolest. The dude was smart!

I always prefered Teenaged Mutant Hero Turtles.
TMNT always seemed as if it was trying to be as good as the Heroes.

that, and it seems more like an anime than a cartoon.

EDIT: Oh Yeah!
EDIT: Oh No!
looks like it needs to be watched on youtube :(

Whats with Nickelodeon and it obsession with CGI? I don't mind the use of CGI but their shows that use it are just bad looking.

Hell yeah he was. Plus his band is purple and I love purple.

And now, for something completely different (and yet totally related).

And in case it doesn't work, here's a link.

What? Is... is that what it went by in other countries? I'm lost.

Well, as long as we don't get to the actual anime version of the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles." You want to see something that'll brutally rape your childhood, well... here ya go.

I am 16 and I grew up watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I think I would still watch a TMNT cartoon, I don't know though. Anyway, I'm nervous to see what Nick will do to the...franchise?

Well, like I said, the actual anime, which technically took place after the original series, I believe, was a horrible thing... Unlike Japanese X-Men, which was just X-Men dubbed into Japanese with 2 freakin awesome Opening's.

Also, If you'd be so kind as to give a link to the eddited opening, I'd be grateful (I'd do it myself, but I'm already late to class, and have to leave right now, so I'll have to look later.)

I've edited my original post. It's now inside the spoiler. (Because my browser hates un-spoilered youtube vids on here. so out of sympathy for anyone else who suffers the same)

this really sux, the archie stuff done in the 90s was horrible and watered the turtles down. when the new cartoons came out in 2003 i was happy cause they were more like the original comics.

i sincerely hope that they don't go back to the old crappy 90s cartoon.

Viacom destroyed MTV and Nickelodeon. I'm sure they will find a way to screw-up the Turtles. I'm hoping for the best, but I'm getting in the bunker just in case.

I completely agree with you.

OT: Thats cool.. I guess.
I think you're both forgetting that Mikey is, in fact, a party dude. He's the best turtle by default.

On topic, this won't end well for anyone involved. They're probably going to replace the powerless-yet-awesome April O'Neil with a whiny pre-teen sidekick.

Before this I payed no heed to the warnings that the world will end in 2012. Now I think that theory may have some merit.
