Yes, but that's batman, not a show about mutant turtles in their teenage year learning to be proper ninjas - taught by an over-sized rat. TMNT should be able to stand on its own without nodding to any other series. That's what made the 80's series so light-hearted and fun. They started with that and went, "Okay, mutant animals and evil ninjas being manipulated by aliens, where can we go from there?" Instead of, "Oh no, man, screw that. Let's become badass and follow the comic. Except, instead of killing off all the turtles at the end, let's keep them alive to milk more cash out of that cow." The turtles in the later series didn't have nearly the personality and... Fun... that they did earlier.
That and didn't all the turtles wear red headbands in the comic? If they were going to do a comic-driven cartoon, they should have had bigger balls and gone for it.
I disagree. While I never read much of the original comics, I still prefer the newer show because...well, even if it sounds stupid, because it was "more dark and edgy". Don't get me wrong, I grew up on the classic cartoon, the Turtles were and still are among my favourite pop-cultural characters and I love almost every incarnation of them. The classic TV-show will always have a special place in my geeky heart, but I prefer the new show for it's better art, style and storyline. Also, the old show, while I can understand what you mean with "lighthearted and fun" almost completly threw away the whole Ninja concept. I mean, come on, they had a friggin'
blimp!
I also think that they have much more personality in the new show, than they had in the old one. The basic character traits (highlighted in the classic theme song) are still there, but are brought out even more. Raph is much more angry and almost completly loses it in a training session with Mike. Dons character gets more involved in a way, that we actually see how he's the worst fighter in the group, but still a viable member.
And even though TMNT 2003 is darker and edgier is was still a lot of fun and a lot of "hell yeah" moments.
And to come back to my Batman-comparison, I don't think it's a bad thing if they give Batman TAS a nod. After all, that show changed everything.
