They were never incredible. Just consistently mediocre. If that's what makes you a band of the decade then there's something wrong.

I love that everyone's going "I wouldn't have voted for Nickleback! I'd have voted for [Band I've never heard of]!"

Fun fact, if the band you like hasn't managed to make it's way into the public consciousness, chances are it's not that great. If you like them, brilliant, don't let me stop you, just remember, more people than you have to like them to make them band of the decade.
Fun Fact, Billboard is hardly an accurate representation of a bands quality as it is an effective tool to see how popular something is. It is inarguable that Nickelback sold plenty of albums, and got a lot of radio play, but to say that this reflects the overall quality of the music just strikes me as silly. What if people were to say that about the spice girls? Or Poison?

That being said, my obvious dislike for the band doesn't actually mean I dont think they deserve this. As I said, billboard is more of a popularity meter, and I doubt anyone can properly refute that Nickelback has been a very popular band these past 10 years.

And one more thing - for anyone who defends Nickelbacks monotonous style of music writing - Its not the fact that most of their songs remain in a similar style, its that I couldnt tell you which songs would go on which albums. Most great bands managed to get distinctive sounds out of each of their albums without sacrficing an original sound or feeling that made the band popular in the first place. It just shows me that the band I like is trying to grow musically at the same time as trying to sell records. Now, tell me which one Nickelback decided to stick with.

After all that though, your post was actually one of the saner responses. I just like to take a springboard where I can get one, and hopefully no offense is taken.

ps. There is a small chance that due to my inherently canadian heritage that I am averse to anything that comes out of this country with the exception of Rush. Sup wit dat?

Not all is lost...
At a concert in Portugal, Nickleback was booed off the stage.

I suddenly really love Portugal.

I don't like their new stuff, but their old stuff is brilliant. It went downhill from All The Right Reasons.

But I guess if it wasn't them, who would it have been?
It could have been much worse.
I don't know, I love Dark Horse.

They won it?! Even if it's only going by sales, that's pretty sad. Radiohead deserved it, IMO. Every release they've made this decade was pure gold.

Nickelback, Green Day. Mob says they're good, thus they've become "cool to hate".
Me? I like both bands because they do catchy music.

I like some of their songs, but that's about it. Sure, some of the songs are ''catchy'', but they are easy to forget and there's no skill in their songs. It's just some random pop music crap with guitar and real drums.
They are one step higher than all that Lady gaga, Britney Spears and other stuff, but that's about it.
It's all about the stupidity of the people mass and WE shouldn't really care. But you should be glad that they didn't make Jonas Brothers the band of the decade.
To end this post, how many of you vote for bands that you like? I bet no one. Nobody cares, but if we voted, then it would slowly change the popularity of 'good' music. (and i mean FUCKING good music)

I'm writing this post with incredible agony and pain. Billboard has just named Nickleback as "Band of the Decade".

http://www.nationalpost.com/arts/story.html?id=2330688

Any faith in humanity I may have garnered in these last ten years is gone.

Well, what are your thoughts? Is Billboard onto something? Or are they really just that stupid?

EDIT: A little humor to relieve the pain:

EDIT EDIT: I read a second source and this one's a bit clearer about how they came up with this. It turns the list came from sales figures. This only hurts my faith in humanity even more.

I like Nickelback, despite the songs the chav's like.

Whats wrong with 'em?
Nickleback perfectly encapsulates everything that is wrong with radio music today by being as 100% bland, cookie cutter, and awful as possible.

For that matter, I'm pretty sure the only good song I heard on the radio all year, possibly all last year, was a muse song.

And I don't really care all that much for them.

What's with all the hate? Sure they don't deserve the band of the decade award but some of their songs are good and they look like a normal rock band. Am I missing something here?

Black Eyed Peas should have won though. The last decade was all about their music.

They are good for you, if you like them. It's personal opinion, really. But could you say that they are the band of the decade? If you do, than i'm really sorry.
There are band that sound exactly as them, there are bands who put more effort in their songs, there are bands that really mean something by their lyrics, there are so many good bands that could be a lot more popular if they had so many money as these guys.
As i said, i like SOME of their songs, but that's about it. They are nothing spectacular and just few steps better than Jonas Brothers.

Meh, I liked Rockstar, though it took awhile. What else have they done? I remember that overplayed Hero song from the Spiderman movie. Wait, I've got two other songs of theirs on my Playlist, but I don't really listen to them. ::checks::

Ah yeah, Far Away and If Everyone Cared. ...Ehhhhhhh, they're okay. Oh, there was that one song that the lead singer of Nickleback did with Santana, Into the Night. I liked that one. I also rather liked that one song, Saturday Night's Alright, that Nickleback did with Kid Rock, but that's just one of my guilty pleasures.

Edit: I guess Saturday Night's Alright doesn't count, since that's a cover of an Elton John song.

Yeah, maybe Billboard's just going by sales numbers?
