I'm still, to this day, trying to figure out how this game could be unsuccessful. It is baffling to me.

Explain, SOMEONE.

Phar!

But yeah, I know nothing except that in the UK/States it's an old man, but in Japan it's a young woman.

It's a JRPG that actually was designed to appeal to western audiences. Instead of the generic mess the JRPG genre is now.

Frankly, Square Enix tried something new. And that never turns out well for them.

I was going to buy it, but some gameplay footage and Yahtzee's review made me change my mind.
Only costs 10£ now though, so I might get it just because!

But yahtzee generally bashes anything that comes from the isle of Japan. I will say that I cannot fish in that game and that has made me quite stuck...quite stuck indeed.

Uhh, there's a huge difference between doing new stuff, and going by what half-baked focus groups think would be good and then doing it badly 'cos it's not what they're good at.

A prime example of how not to do things is Tecmo Koei's Quantum Theory.
It's a cover based shooter. Westerners like that stuff, right?
Worst game ever.

I rented it, didn't like it, and took it back before the term was up. It just felt stiff and fiddly to me, which I was really disappointed about because I tried really hard to like it.

Yeah, I too know next-to-nothing about it.

But if it is like, only a tenner...this is an interesting prospect.

Mmmh, the only problem must be [generally] poor reviews of it, and very poor marketing. It was one of those games that looked kinda bad sitting there all sneaky on the shelf. But people on this site hold it in such high regard [some go as far as no name it their GOTY]...it must surely be worth a tenner.

I'll see if I see it around^_^ whee.

I'd agree with bad marketing, it was just thrown into the wilderness, like the majority of JRPGs for that matter, Resonance of Fate was the same in that respect. I've not completed it yet, but I really enjoyed what I did play of it. The gameplay and graphics could have done with some work, but the story and music was solid.

Oh and Square Enix didn't actually make it, since they're the publisher they probably had some say in it, but the developer was Cavia. Which unfortunately was absorbed recently, meaning no more games from them. Shame really.

I got this recently, pretty suprised by it actually. Great story, good gameplay and although i'm not too far into it, it seems like it will have quite a deep customisation system. Well worth the £10.

Yahtzee might've called it shit, but Yahtzee's a pretty shitty reviewer. I wouldn't listen to him at all.

The gameplay is more like a beat'em'up with JRPG elements. Oh and magic.

I bought the game for $10. Pretty much a steal, I'd have paid the full retail for it.

It's not really that they tried something new, a JRPG for western audiences just doesn't seem like a good idea since more action oriented games are popular over here. I really haven't met anyone who likes JRPGs who isn't also into other Japanese things.

It has an amazing plot and damn good characters.
Also it tugs at your heartstrings, if you have any left that is.

It's at least worth looking into.

As for the original topic, probably marketing.

It really is quite action oriented. The combat is intuitive, the spellcasting works well. It's not a menu driven mess like most JRPGs are. This is why it probably should've succeeded here.

It was my personal Game of the Year.... so yeah, get it. It's awesome. Just play it.

OT, it probably had to do with bad marketing. I only ever heard about it 8 months before it came out in some weird magazine ad. Since then, I was just curious to know what it was and was intrigued from the beginning.

However, I had never seen another ad for it since then. Anyone you ask won't usually know what it is. And those who do will either side with the majority of critics and say it's horrible or side with people like me who loved it.

There's a small group of the latter and a small group of the former. Most people don't even know what the fuck it is passed glancing at the box in store.

Its been on my "to buy" list since my friend rented it out. The gameplay was cool and I remember someone swearing at a book. But I just bought Arkham Asylum....choices choices

Rats, Cavia got absorbed? But I loved Drakengard (which oddly enough connects to Nier)...

OT: I'd have to say marketing; I only heard about it from ZP, and when I was at EB, saw it was $50, found it was made by Cavia, and that the characters seemed Drakengard-esque. Took it home, played it, and it's one of my favorite games ever.

I have no idea, though I suspect the lack of marketing might be to blame. It's a shame, because the game is really quite good. In fact, it's one of my favourite games at this point.
